Everything has increased in price recently. There is a good chance that Ford, Chevy, Hummer etc, will have to increase their prices as well once they actually have a product rolling off of production lines.
Ford just reduced the cost of the max tow package to keep MSRP under $80k. If they hike the price before I get my delivery I will be absolutely floored.

Maybe, time will tell. It still seems to be a good value at the new price.
Except I'm not shopping for a Porsche, and an F150 Extended Range Lariat is coming in at about $15,000 less MSRP than how I had my large pack Rivian. AND there are reasonably decent odds the f150 will get another $7500 off by a tax rebate in the State.

Is the Rivian really worth more than $20,000 more than a Lariat? Not to me. Especially not with the startup risk. Amazon will keep vans going, there is nothing saying they will keep the trucks rolling.

Rivian got the reservations with an attractive pricing. In my case, the initially quoted $70K was less than the Model X at that time ($79K base model). Went ahead and placed the pre-order in 9/2019.

About a year later, they announced the Launch edition at $77K and I still thought that it was decent.

Rivian used the reservation count as a bait in their journey to go public (of course they had every right to).

Now, they are tracking back on the price. Which I think is not good for me to develop trust in the brand now.

I had a Model X reservation prior to the Refresh announcement. Tesla did a price adjustment and gave a discount of 2K on the new price (new price was $8K more with the @2K discount). After that, they raised the price two times but that did not impact me and it was only for new orders.

I get that Rivian has the right to make price adjustments. But an increase from 77K to 94K is very steep.

Another way to look at it is this way. If Rivian had advertised the price of the R1S at $94K when the Tesla Model X was available at $79K would I have placed a pre-order ? The answer is 'No'.

I expected Rivian to have marginal price increase and put the new pricing to effect for newer orders.

Based on the new price, I don't think I will be buying the R1S. Its sad as I was looking forward to it. Will keep the pre-order on until I get to test drive it. I don't think I will buy it.

I get it, more options for a truck. No real option for an SUV to replace my Jeep GC….

If something was out there to look at I would but there isn’t.

The R1S deliveries have been sparse if at all. I have a June/July window, who knows where that will end up being. After reading through the forums I may move up dramatically from that, or could still be delayed, would like to see traction on those. My guess is the delivery windows will hit the accounts next week after the shake out from this week.

March 10th will be interesting.

True. Hopefully the EV9, P3, and whatever the Volvo P3 variant is show up soon.

The other thing that passes me off more so as I continue to dwell on it is that it looks like this was planned from at least before the IPO. So they kept prices artificially low to jack up both reservation numbers and the IPO price as well as get great reviews like the truck of the year award. It was a fucking sham to swindle money out of investors.

And honestly, it also pisses me off because it makes me feel bad for all of their customer facing employees who have to deal with us.

I mostly lurk but want to commiserate with the community. Pigs get fat hogs get slaughtered. I find it ironic that RJ said their approach was under promise and over deliver. Also, word of caution for engaging those playing devil’s advocate. I would bet many are Rivian paid influencers. Even if they backtrack in some way hard to support a company that pulls this…untrustworthy and/or incompetent.

Again, I'm super upset. Extremely, but my real gripe is the value against the competition (pending any real deliveries or other EV trucks).

I'm torn in that regard.

But circa 2015 the "brand new" dual motor Model S I had was 115k (90D fully loaded). 275 mile range, smaller, slower, not as nice.

So I still feel the Rivian is a good product, but now with the other EV trucks offering up a good deal, the R1T value begins to dwindle.

This is really crappy, but still holding tight.

Now as for the stock... I have no clue.

Am I the only person who had a price over 100k in my head when I made the deposit before pricing was released? That was just off of the specs I was reading and comparing to other vehicles.

It is still under what I budgeted. I’m dropping the charger, not a great deal at 750. I’m also dropping the 2k under body shields, really only had that for the tow hooks. Gets me at 93,550 so a 16.3% increase.

Just for a value reality check, I paid 77k in 2016 for a rear wheel drive Model S with a 75 kWh battery. That was 6 years ago, before the price increase today my R1S was only 3.4K more and that was with crossbars, wall charger, and spare tire.

Plus 77k in 2016 would be 90.2k in 2022….. so with adjusted inflation the new price is 3.35k higher.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m disappointed this was so last minute and even more disappointed this did not come from RJ instead of “The Rivian Team”. Also a little bit of a bad taste that the 2k+ employee deliveries went out at the lower price.
You found a good way to convince yourself that waiting 3 years and paying $100K for something sold to you for $80K is not bad business practice.

You also have to take into account the timing of things, and how this is strategically being done so that no one that reserved a Rivian will get it for the advertised price.

Add to that the uncertainty of waiting well into 2024 where your $78K reservation might now be $120K and by your logic any price increases would make sense because somehow you’ll justify it comparing it against another baseline in the market.

Do you think Ford will sell the F-150 Lighting at $80K because the Rivian is $100K? Not happening.

Guys as a person who has been through this too many times. DO NOT CANCEL YOUR PREORDERS YET.

for the love of god just don‘t. Sit on it and let the dust settle.

im still catching up on this thread and am collecting my thoughts on this. Well aware people will complain “but you got it cheaper” all I’m saying is don’t knee jerk yourself in the nuts
Really tough to hear from someone getting to jump the line and get it cheaper. We appreciate your vehicle walk through, but here you need to sit down and be quiet.

I’m referring to my other experiences specifically w the Tesla Roof and some of the other cars I had. Where I reacted too early and ended up shooting myself in the foot.

I read that Laura Schwab warned them that their vehicles were underpriced. She was ignored, and later fired. There is a lot more to the story of course, but makes you wonder if this hike was in the plans from the begining. Keep the price low, get as many preorders as you can, go public saying you've started deliveries (to employees anyway) then before you really ramp up deliveries, hike the price.

I haven't canceled yet, but probably will. This is jarring. How they heck are they going to change the planet if the vehicle is only affordable to a very small portion of the population?
