Keep in mind this is a preproduction truck. Could be a difference in the production models.

interesting that tire pressure is 48 vs 36 PSI
Rivian has air suspension. Ford has a history of specing under-inflation to improve ride comfort as a cheaper alternative to improving suspension. the Ford Explorer rollover fiasco was a tragic consequence of that practice. Hopefully Ford is at least using tire models with sidewalls that can handle the weight of the Lightning at these pressures. IIRC, the pressures spec’d in the Explorer were too low for the weight of the vehicle which contributed to the failures.

The construction of the tires themselves were also a factor, combined with a vehicle that wasn't designed with rollover concerns. The Ford lightning should do significantly better with a lower center of gravity.

The 36psi is also probably set for loading, towing and hauling. What's interesting is if someone chooses to bump the tire pressures up to say 45PSI - and it handles it, I wonder what the range would be. Better yet, the Pro SR model comes with AT Tires and gets 230 miles. The R1T with AT tires gets about 270 miles. It's not apples to apples, but a Lightning Pro SR with AS tires could potentially hit that range as well.

Still very different trucks, with very different intentions but I just find it interesting.

It makes sense. Tire compound, likelihood of driver using the truck as a sport car and range consideration may have contributed to those choices as well. It would be interesting to watch both over time and see how they perform.

I haven't been keeping up with the Lightning. What brand/model tire(s) are they running in that 275/60-20 size? EV specific?

That GVW (payload capacity) on the Lightening is rather disappointing at only 1452#. That would be marginal at best for us as we pull a 7,500# Airstream Travel Trailer that has a 1,000# tongue weight. That would leave 425# capacity for all passengers and cargo in the truck.

C.R.Rivian's R1T sticker shows a GVW of 1,387#. He must have the off-road option as the standard R1T GVW is published as 1,760#.

By comparison, our 2020Silverado 2500 has GVW of 3,136#.

We would require the R1T with the 1,760# GVW to handle our towing needs.

What happened to Ford claiming a 2,000+ lbs payload capacity?
