They could, I ordered a Model S in June 2016, thought I was getting one with the faux grill on it, when I went to pick it up in July it was one of the first few deliveries with the new front end on it.

I was pleasantly surprised but still surprised.

Normally (traditional) has been anything after Oct would be the next year. My 2020 Model X was delivered December 18th 2019 but everything shows as a 2020 Long Range.

Interesting I just ran my Jeep and my Tesla through KBB.com using the same model, options, and mileage to compare. For the Jeep it made a 2k difference, for the Tesla the 2016 actually priced 1k more than the 2017. Maybe because of mileage being lower for an older car?

I plan on having the Rivian for a long time so I do not really care what the year is.

That wer're aware of... Me personally I'm betting there will be updates to MY23 vehicles. Interesting post OP. First one in a while that actually made me pause to think ... If there wasn't MY23 updates, as a shareholder it'd give me reason to pause as well.

I know it's probably too early to integrate some of Munro's production mods and parts consolidation (they were hopefully already planning some improvements). Yet low hanging fruit would be to remove some color options for exterior.

Yep, I think 2023 won't bring many changes. Maybe incremental through the year but that will never stop. Sounds like most people thing Jan 1.

Tesla has gone to the standard Big Three model year designation scheme a couple of years back.

My Model Y was built Sept 2020 and I took delivery on Nov 3rd 2020 (yes, that election day!)... it was titled as a 2021 model year.

It would be nice for those of us who are still waiting to get a 2023 model (yes, purely for the eventual resale value down the line) if it gets built starting Sept 2022.
