Where are you shopping? A quick search on Amazon shows plenty of sub $800 aluminum hard tonneau covers for much bigger beds.
Just searched amazon, and most of the full aluminum tonneaus are $800+ There are many that have aluminum rails, but not panels? Nonetheless, I'm happy to pay the $800 for a rivian designed and warrantied product. I never wanted the power tonneau- too much to go wrong.

Lol. Check other comparable aftermarket options. $800 is a bargain and I believe they're aluminum which doesn't come cheap... They will have to have some sort of interlocking as well so its not just 4 $20 pieces of plywood.
Plywood is tickling $70 for a 4x8 sheet here

If I was Rivian I wouldn't charge less than $800. But that doesn't change what the component cost to the manufacturer. With the $1500 automatic they had to integrate electronics and created obvious warranty exposure. It was a much lower margin item compared to manual, even if the auto had worked well.

So the tonneau has gone from a good deal that was perk of buying the vehicle to what is probably a hurriedly designed replacement to avoid an epa range rating retest.

I'm kinda upset about this.

My tonneau cover has been bulletproof, my tailgate auto down is horrendous.

The latter, at least, is probably just a torsion spring that can be adjusted.

IMHO, screw the tonneau cover. It’s a pickup truck, for crying out loud. Redesign the bed/bed rails to allow for functional versatility. You want to attach a shell - done. You want racks - high, low, whatever - done. You want simple crossbars - done. You really need a tonneau cover - get one. Rivian simply forgot what they were building - an adventure vehicle - when they lost their way with the gee whiz tonneau cover and crossbar setup. They painted themselves and R1T owners into a corner. I say, now is the time to back up a step or two and give the buyers more options to outfit their adventure rigs, as they see fit.

Communicate this to Rivian ? they've tried twice now to fix it and it still is 50% of the time working at best.

ERROR! You have used “Rivian” and “communicate“ in the same sentence. Does not compute

Apologies if this has been mentioned in the thread...

If this manual version slides into the rails, does that mean you can't remove or open it without lowering the tailgate? So, when you have a bike rack on or you're parked in a tight garage, yer fucked?

The manual cover sounds like it's either on or off, eliminating dry storage in the bed. You can't crack it open to get something. If so, me not happy.
Perfect example of why it’s impossible to satisfy everyone.

It is probably designed that way to make it lockable.

What's funny about all this is I never wanted the power tonneau cover. I added it to get my car delivered earlier. Now that it's being taken away and I've seen how it works, I don't want the truck without the powered version!

I've read this entire thread, and just want to be clear. If I want the powered version, my only option is to wait because the no cover or manual cover options CANNOT be retrofitted, correct? Has that been confirmed?

If so....decisions, decisions!
