Not sure if there are any tax / rebate considerations. If you think you'll take delivery before the March "clarification" than probably not, but if you think sticking with the Red pushes you past that window - perhaps worth considering.

You’ve waited this long, get the one you wanted. I had that window and got mine delivered last week, it will happen fast once you get build confirmed step. Haven’t seen Red Canyon in person yet …

If you have a chance at a shop truck that is everything but color and the color in question is not something you hate (likely not because it was your original choice) then I say take it now. With Rivian, it seems best to take it when offered rather than wait for what "might" be coming s00n. The powered tonneau is a bonus and if it works - Yay! If it doesn't, they'll fix it. Bird in the hand and all...

Oh...and if the tax incentives are at all still available for a delivery now, take it and run...

BTW...My Shop selection was delivered four days after choosing it.

Oh and, FWIW, my powered tonneau is working fine after three months. Good luck with your choice...

As has been mentioned earlier.. "The Shop" vehicles are all 2022 models (confirmed via Guide email this morning). If you wait for your natural placement 8-Steps to open... you will get a 2023 VIN Rivian.

Rivian has put themselves in a precarious position by waiting till the last min to switch to 2023 VINS. It's now 2023 and they are selling 2022 (on the Title) vehicles in the Shop. If they had switched to 2023 VIN's in Sept like everyone else (including Tesla now) does they wouldn't have any "2022 leftovers" in the Shop.

There’s nothing precarious about that, they are still brand new trucks configured exactly the same as any 2023. The valuation of the truck is unchanged unlike what people seem to think.

-You take delivery of your 2022 VIN "Shop" R1T today.
-I take delivery of my 2023 VIN R1T today.
-Both trucks are 100% identical, same color, interior, wheels, etc... and we put exactly the same amount of miles on the trucks over the next 365 days.
We come back here on Jan 3rd 2024 and put your 2022 VIN and my 2023 VIN through any online evaluator you choose... I guarantee my 1yr old VIN will be worth more than your 2yr old VIN on Jan 3rd 2024.

All Rivian color are beautiful. My truck with powered tonneau is still working since delivery in September. IMO, truck with powered tonneau trump over color. If it breaks, Rivian will fix it.

Maybe the powered tonneau will offset the 22 vs. 23 value difference - all else being equal?

No flame necessary...just kidding...:like:

I doubt it. Have had plenty of late year model vehicles and the value has never had any notable difference from the next year model with the same mileage.

I just did a KBB valuation for a 2021 vs 2022 Tesla Model Y, same options, same color both with 24K miles on the odometer. I couldn't do 2022 vs 2023 because they don't have 2023 available in their system yet, but that's not important. We want to compare "value" of a 1 year newer VIN vs. the previous year VIN.

Results below....
If it's hard to see.. the 1 year newer VIN is "valued" at $4K + more than the 1 yr older VIN.

I believe Tesla switched (in Sept 2020) to starting next year VIN's with Sept builds specifically to prevent this situation from happening.

The situation still happens, but now the same vehicles sold a few days apart - one in August and one in September - will be considered 1 year apart. Same situation, just a different cutoff date.

The whole "label it as next year's model even though it's still June" is a bunch of marketing BS designed to play to human psychology. This is the same reason magazines (remember magazines?) are published and distributed a month or more before the date shown on the cover. No one wants to buy last year's car or last month's issue.

^ I agree it's BS, but as you see in the KBB valuation... the VIN title year does impact resale and or trade in value. So if you have a choice like us buyers taking delivery in Dec or Jan have.. it's possibly worth waiting another few weeks to get a "year newer" vehicle.

Thanks all for the suggestions and advice. I decided to stick w/Canyon Red over Limestone w/a powered tonneau cover.

Now, we'll see what the shop gifts in the near future before my build starts being manufactured. The next question might be do I give up the 20" Black ATs for a powered tonneau cover ?

Regretfully I’m going to confirm another poster’s comment on the tonneau. I have a service tech at my house updating my seats right now and according to him the word around the water cooler is the powered tonneau is getting discontinued and all power owners will be offered a manual tonneau replacement.

Important for those of us with a still working tonneau to make sure to keep it going. Also hopefully someone can provide a fix in the aftermarket.
