PSA: Don't Get Locked Out

Wife and I both have Mobile Phone Key Enabled.

This morning I drove my wife to the airport.

Before leaving she got to R1T before me and her Mobile Phone App engaged the Rivian as the driver (I didn't notice this). At the airport I got out to grab her bags and give her a hug and kiss -- I had left my phone inside the R1T on the console. She walked into the airport and I went to leave, her being the "driver" the Rivian locked after she got out of proximity range (while my phone was in the truck). Fortunately I was able to run in the airport and find her so she could come back and unlock the Rivian. I changed the driver profile from her to me and all was good.

It would seem the software should NEVER lock the truck as long as a phone is inside the vehicle (while in Park) and the Rivian App is open. It should be able to switch from my wife's phone to my phone if she is not in proximity to the vehicle.

This is a good reminder. My wife was in the car waiting while I ran into a store for a pickup and the vehicle locked her in it. She then opened the door to let some air in and the alarm went off. She had her phone on her the entire time.

The problem with the fob is you must press the buttons. I enjoy carrying a fob as well. But I’m used to throwing it in my pocket or backpack and walking up to a car and it unlocking when I touch the handle. On the Rivian you must have the fob in your hand and actively press the lock / unlock buttons. It is a pain.

I have subject my wife to this, she rides with me, I run in to a store and it locks when I run away.

I never put it together as being caused because my profile is active and I departed from the proximity of the truck. She typically just opens her app and unlocks the truck.

It would be nice to not lock her in the truck when my PaaK leaves the area.

The issue with the key fob is that the vehicle doesn't even recognize it! If I leave my R1T unlocked and come back to it after it went to sleep, open the door, try to shift into drive, it says something like "key fob not recognized" and the only way to get it recognized is to take the fob our of your pocket and hit the unlock button. WTF!

I just never trust my R1T. It will open and close on a whim. Sometimes the keyfob will keep it unlocked, sometimes, not. I've tested with the Android Samsung Note 9 (yes, I'm that far behind, but I didn't like the Pixel 7 Pro prices) asleep and not able to see my face or touch my fingerprint, and with the phone awake, active bluetooth, cellular, wifi and the active app session controlling the vehicle … no discernible difference in behavior.

When I approach from the front, I observe three separate steps while it contemplates the prospect of unlocking the doors. Good lord, it's bloody annoying …

1. I can hear it cycling the lock on the charge port
2. I hear power go to the cabin and the radar detector chirps
3. Time slows to temporal stasis … space, time, energy and gravity converge
   … seconds become hours … it's raining, I'm holding stuff …
4. The doors unlock just as I reach to touch my phone in dismay

p.s.
I've had similarly erratic behavior from the keyfob and a 50:50 chance Gary (who still doesn't do dashcam duty) whether Gary recorded me.

If it can detect the keyfob, why isn't the keyfob a passive key for proximity unlock? (I've read this is possible, but the tech at the service center and the service writer both said "nope, maybe that's an employee car.")

I’ve never had that luxury. I grew up by putting the key into the door and actually turning it by hand, and have only progressed as far as pressing buttons. Yup, I’m old school. But by actively having to lock the doors, I’m never at risk of locking the keys in the car or depending on anything as prone to failure as using my phone as a key. I’m a mysterious mix of old and new

So I’m confused so far. Are my doors supposed to unlock if I walk up with PAAK? So far I have to open app and hit unlock button. Then have to use key card to start. Deleted already and reloaded?
