See you are in Austin? Will you be installing yourself or taking it to a shop in the area?
Yes, I live in Austin. I plan on doing it myself. Originally I thought I would cut slots to allow the plastic panels to be removed without removing the brackets. I am most likely going to switch to the 4" hole saw method. I asked one of the Rivian techs at the Austin service center how often they have to remove those panels for any service and he said it was very rare. He also agree that the removal process is tedious and the clips are a pain.

Curious how the 4" holes look with grommets once someone has them installed.

^^^ This ^^^

I'm quite torn on cutting the panels now. Previously I was planning on just taking them off and putting them it in my garage with my aero shields but beginning to rethink that considering the horror stories of getting them off in the first place (breaking tabs, adhesive etc). People say just use the rubber gaskets but haven't seen any evidence that this is actually a proven solution. I just hate permanent mods like cutting holes but I guess the worst case scenario is that I would need to order replacement panels. I mean the same thing can be said of pulling them off and breaking them in the process. I haven't quite figured out the downside of taking them off and leaving them off. I doubt they're going to do much for aero considering the running boards will still be there disturbing everything. ?

I know the panels can be scary, but if you truly take your time and poke each clip with a very long screwdriver they come off easy without any breakage. I have the running boards installed as they came in last night. I'm very happy with them and for now going to leave the panels off. They've been off for 5 weeks now and here's a picture of what the under carriage looks like

Thanks.

i’ve been reading posts while i wait for my running boards. i’ve notice folks are saying how heavy the packaging is and was wondering if the boards themselves are heavy? is it just a lot of packing material that is making the package heavy? how much reduction to mileage are folks seeing? still excited to get the boards though!
I had to unpack the boards and take them into the garage piece by piece. Packing material is bubble wrap and foam - not heavy. PROBABLY 1003 so not much if any mileage reduction. Going to install this weekend using the 4" hole method.

Tried taking the panels off this morning. Struggled with the clips near the center panel on each side where it felt like if I just pulled it, they would snap off and break

Usually you can buy the chips cheap anyway. Does anyone have any pics of the clips? Would help if people had some extra on hand.

I have been following the EV1 running board thread since it started and am considering getting either those or the sliders towards the end of april for my birthday,

I took my R1T in for service and had a long conversation with the service tech (i think one of the main ones) about how it would affect the warranty and he said as long as it didn't alter the truck in a significant way, I should be fine. When I asked for clarification, he used an example of as if it is mounting using bolts to the frame I should be fine. But if any of the mounting bolts for the battery are lowered or used, that could affect it. He also confirmed that if mounted simply to the frame where the plastic panels are, it would be rare that they would need to be removed. That put my mind at ease a lot as I was worried about how it could affect the warranty.

With that said, I would like to ask the opinion of some people in this thread as I go through all 70 pages again:

1). For the running boards, can i confirm that all the mounting points are on the frame, in the area removed by the panels and NOT using any of the battery bolts?
2). Same for the sliders... can I confirm that they are only mounted to the frame and do not use any of the bolts from the battery, etc...
3). some people raised concern about the pass through design, that it could let debris, mud, etc kick up. what are the thoughts on this? Have they changed?
4). For those that have had them installed, has it ever been an issue?
5). Has anyone who had them installed made it to service yet to see their take on having the running boards?
6). Any other thoughts you can provide me with?

Sorry to ask so many questions... just trying to do my due diligence so that I get it right the first time.

Best

to OP / EV1... Since the treads are bolted on, are there any plans on introducing other treads later on such as a solid tread?

Adam, it's not legal to deny warranty due to an aftermarket product, unless that product is proven to have directly caused the warranty failure. This is federal law, and supported by both political sides (republicans and democrats) because of the anti-competition aspects it implies. OEMs / dealers / local service people are usually undereducated and often try and scare or deter customers from using aftermarket or non-oem parts, more motivated from the fact that they want to sell their own parts. You can read some basics here: https://evsportline.com/blogs/news/will-installing-aftermarket-parts-void-my-ev-warranty

I am an expert in this area, and a member of the board of directors at SEMA, which has a large regulatory and legislative arm working to protect the rights of customers who want to use aftermarket parts and / or make their own repairs. https://www.sema.org/government-affairs
If you have any issues arising from the denial of warranty due to aftermarket parts, feel free to reach out.

Best regards,
Brian

How about this... Can Rivian deny you warranty for removing or putting holes in the plastic covering which resulted in some kind of damage?
