Given I was pre-Mar '22 pricing for my LE, I'm not sure it's worth the extra $ for a few more miles. If there's a notable refresh to the model (which I can't see for many years) then maybe.

I'm keping mine. With the pre 3/1 price and tax credit it's a steal. And 350miles is plenty of range.

Now that Rivian has published the Max Pack ranges for the R1T, I am curious if current Rivian owners will be considering the upgrade.

I personally am not ready to trade in because my power tonneau still works, and they haven't re-introduced them yet. Also not sure if the Max Pack will really be worth it for me until more information about the charging curve is published. What would get me to trade-in is a higher output quad with the Max pack though. Assuming the horsepower number starts with a 1.

Official Max Pack ranges:

Max Pack 21 inch = 410 Miles
Max Pack 22 inch = 380 Miles
Max Pack 20 inch = 355 miles
Large Pack 21 inch = 352 miles
Large Pack 22 inch = 341 miles
Large Pack 20 inch = 307 miiles
Unless they offer a "battery replacement" where they just drop the LARGE pack out and replace it with a MAX pack for a reasonable cost, I am not interested.

It would be nice that after the warranty on the battery, they would offer that option. I would be willing to pay a reduced cost of $10k for a new battery pack. But then again, by the time the warranty is out (5+ years from now) I think battery technology will be better with better range and probably lighter packs.

I will trade in my R1S when there is an RnS that out-performs the current off-road vitals.

* The Rivian-patented per-wheel gearbox comes to mind. Where is that link and is there any rumored movement on this?

* Rivian winch option

* Rivian T-top option

* Removable doors

* Thick skin

What am I missing?

Maybe in 5-6 years when other improvements have occurred. Charging standard, range/chemistry further improvements, tech improvements, bed space and tailgate improvements, etc.

You’re going to be waiting A long time for any 100+kWh battery replacement to be even close $10K.

I know it will never happen, but one can wish.

I base my assumption on what I call "technological advancement". I do CADD for a living and have been doing it for 40 years. My first hard drive was about 20" wide, 30" long, and 6" high.....and was all of 10 MB....and it cost $10,000. I just bought a 5TB portable hard drive for $129.

Do I see the price drop that much in a mere 5 to 10 years....probably not, but I do see advancement in technology and with advancement comes lower prices.

if Rivian says they'll credit us our purchase price towards the upgrade then yes I would. Otherwise, no chance.

Many years back I was in the retail business and around the mid 70's when video recorders first came out (beta max then VHS) they were about $1,500 plus or minus. When they dropped to $1,000 we could not keep them in stock. Within a few years they were selling for half that price and a few years later the price dropped again by half. Will EV replacement batteries follow the pattern, maybe yes maybe not but there will be a significant price drop by the time we need to replace our R1 batteries assuming we still have the vehicles. On another note I had a 2004 Honda hybrid with the batteries warrantied for 8 years, they lasted 12. My point is that the batteries made today are much better then in 2004 and will probably last a lot longer then expected.

100% agree. What is made today is way better than 5, 10 years ago. I was using the $10,000 mark more as a bullet point. I have been reading that Honda and Toyota are doing amazing things with polymer solid-state battery technology. I think that will be a game changer when it comes to market. From what I read, it will be able to charge a battery (I think it mentioned a 200kW) in about 10 mins. (from low % to full).

I love our R1T and I am hoping that when the battery is spent, they will offer a replacement battery sort of like an ICE vehicle....always can get a new engine etc.

I'm not an engineer or a mechanic but from what I think I've learned from watching Sandy Munro videos is that the Rivian batteries are not easily replaceable, the labor might end up costing more than the batteries or even the vehicle itself 10 years down the road. My other long term concern are the electronics, these EV's are basically a computer on wheels and we all know what happens when the gremlins get inside.......

My quad 20"AT gets "enough" range, even when towing, for my uses. Especially now that there are RAN stations *exactly* at the right distance from my home to reach multiple of my usual camping sites when towing. (i.e. If I start from my house at 100%, then when towing my trailer, I will make it to a RAN with 10-20% charge, then I'll make it to my destination just fine charging to 85% at the RAN.)

I bought my R1T expecting to own it for a decade or more. That's still the plan. Now, if the Max pack was actually a 25% higher-capacity pack that got 25% more range than the Large pack, *MAYBE*. But at only 15% increase in range? For $10,000? No thanks.

Now if we *have* to replace our R1T for some reason, I might consider a dual max. Or if our second vehicle needs replacing, and we decide to replace it with an R1S, and the R1S has a max pack available. But just "upgrade our existing R1T?" No.

But after experiencing the Large’s inefficiency compared to my previous EVs I prefer it over the Max. Also the Large is lighter
The rumour perpetuated by someone in the Rivian Chat is the payload will be the same between large and max. Which could mean everything is the same but there was a chemistry upgrade for Max pack. It also means that Rivian's cost isn't strictly a multiplier since the cost per cell could go up more than 16% over what they are paying for the Large pack cells.

You'd almost always want to just replace the entire pack, which isn't that much labor involved.

I typically keep my cars for 12-15 years so I've got a long way before I replace the R1T.
