I'm confused--what'd I miss?

I went with the 275/60R20 BECAUSE they have the same diameter as the 275/55R21.

The (currently) Rivian configuration size for 20s is 275/65R21, which is different enough to cause significance with speedometer (and odometer) calibration needed..

So, 275/60R20 should NOT need service, or calibration, or anything unnecessary, ergo allowing me to swap freely between the two sets of tires at my own discretion.
I misread your statement, no calibration needed if you keep the same diameter.

Going from 21" to OEM 20" size actually makes the speedometer more accurate (empirically based on GPS) the only issue is that your GOM will be way off. This is the camp I am in.

Going from OEM 20" to 21" (or similar diameter) without calibration will result in a large speedo offset and also GOM will be potentially off

OK, I'll bite: what does GOM stand for?

??‍♂ that's me! Speedo is off by 4mph instead of the normal 1-2, and GOM is way low. My efficiency is much better and I always arrive with significantly more than it estimates.

My truck recently got updated to 21" wish the 20" wheels and 275/60/20 on them. Pics to come tomorrow or Wednesday.

You are pointing out the obvious, but Rivian can not seem to grasp the situation or how to correct it. Rivian has not added any service centers recently, but they seem to be more than willing and able to open new sales centers. That's all they need is to sell a lot more trucks that they can't service. Before you know it, there will be a one year wait to get a spare tire installed. Who is driving the bus????

Brian
Based purely on anecdotal evidence, from my experience with my R1T and overhearing others checking in to the service centers, there are a lot of cars coming in for the same production issues (wind noise from corner windows, alignment, tpms, clicking driveshafts etc). So there is a ton of demand, right now, per vehicle.

The service center capacity will presumably be built out to meet expected demand long term, not based on this current spike in demand.

Once the teething issues die down, I’d expect appointments to be available in a reasonable time again.

I'm pretty sure the stitching for my bird's eye camera is different with the taller tires on the truck. It would make sense since the angles where they should stitch together are going to be slightly different.
Nope since the auto height and other things change the height as well, also from people I know who are working on the airbag sensor left which basically tricks the truck into thinking it is lower are saying the camera works fine, which tells me the stitching is done on the fly using reference marks.

Does the UI show the 21" wheels after the update?

If I want 20" wheels with 275/60R20 tires, am I better off
#1 buying the truck with 20" wheels, swapping the tires, and then asking Rivian to update the software,
or #2 buying the truck with 21" wheels and then buying and mounting 20" wheels with 275/60R20 tires?

I'll send pics of UI tomorrow, they're literally working on subframe right now.

I did #1, but I think I got lucky they let it slide, or they're finally coming around to the idea. (115 load index, no less!) No complaints, I like the original 20" staple rims. If you like the stock 20s, give it a go.

We planned on #2 for the wife. Save the reprogramming hassle, sell the 21s, pick up some aftermarket wheels and try to net zero the cost with $1800 less on the loan.

But the 21s market is pretty slim, we don't want to get stuck with another stack of wheels in the garage (already have winter set now). Plus we've seen a few Launch editions with 20s roll through the shop, so probably snag one of those soon.

I finally got my truck back, and they updated me to 21" despite my 275/60R20 wheels and tires! It shows 21" in the UI, speedo, trip meter, etc are based on this. I'll let you know efficiencies with AS+3 on this UI in about a week as I test things.

My regular commute trip meter is spot on now! It's the same energy and (corrected) efficiency from my aero/non-aero tests.

Interesting find: actual diameter correction was 2%, not 3% as the tiresize.com/comparison calculator showed comparing 275/65R20.
