Looking at the various articles from around Oct 20th regarding the VIN decoding for the Cybertruck (link), and combined with the latest tidbits from the Rogan podcast with Musk on the 31st (link), it appears that the payload of at least some of the configurations of the Cybertruck will not be 3,500 lbs as originally claimed.
Obviously this is still quite good, but I wonder how many hit the higher end vs the lower end. In practice, it probably won't matter much, as majority of truck buyers are purchasing half-tons, which in many cases have less payload than many of our R1 vehicles!
(Edit: changed that to than, yeesh)
- From the podcast, Musk noted some versions weigh about 7,000 lbs, with some versions close to 6,000 lbs (inferred that he is referring to curb weight).
- From the VIN decoding, there are two GVWR ratings in the CT VIN code:
- 8,001 - 9,000 lbs
- 9,001 - 10,000 lbs
Obviously this is still quite good, but I wonder how many hit the higher end vs the lower end. In practice, it probably won't matter much, as majority of truck buyers are purchasing half-tons, which in many cases have less payload than many of our R1 vehicles!
