Looking at the various articles from around Oct 20th regarding the VIN decoding for the Cybertruck (link), and combined with the latest tidbits from the Rogan podcast with Musk on the 31st (link), it appears that the payload of at least some of the configurations of the Cybertruck will not be 3,500 lbs as originally claimed.

  • From the podcast, Musk noted some versions weigh about 7,000 lbs, with some versions close to 6,000 lbs (inferred that he is referring to curb weight).
  • From the VIN decoding, there are two GVWR ratings in the CT VIN code:
    • 8,001 - 9,000 lbs
    • 9,001 - 10,000 lbs
Assuming the higher GVWR rating is related to the higher curb weight (ie due to additional motors and batteries), we can infer payload range of minimum 2,000 lbs up to 3,000 lbs.

Obviously this is still quite good, but I wonder how many hit the higher end vs the lower end. In practice, it probably won't matter much, as majority of truck buyers are purchasing half-tons, which in many cases have less payload than many of our R1 vehicles!

(Edit: changed that to than, yeesh)

I'm probably most curious how it'll handle being overloaded. Of course if it is actually rated for 3500 lbs, that's going to be a hard thing to do for the average person.

Shouldn't be that much stress on the upper control arm in a double wishbone. Design is probably okay? But I wouldn't make any promises on it.

It looks like that top plate the arm mounts to is bent upward.

I'm trying to think of why the upper control arm would have less forces on it than the lower control arm. They run in parallel. It seems like they should see similar forces. My Lotus Elise has basically the same upper and lower arms for their wishbone suspension, and they both look stronger than the upper in this picture.

Edit to add, my model 3 looks stronger than that too (and stronger than the Elise) with similar perceived strength top and bottom.

Looks like they're shipping 116H rated tires, same as Rivian. I'm still quite confused about their payloads because of this though, doesn't seem like nearly a high enough rating.

If the request was "make us a tire that has a cyber-'hardcore' theme but we want it to be 75% bare sidewall", then it's a bullseye.
