But, even a ~$55K R2 would be same price as the lowest trim CT because of CT’s tax credit eligibility.

We obviously dont know what the specs of an R2 truck would be, but I can’t imagine it being close to the CT RWD and R1T dual standard pack.

A $61K RWD CT minus federal and any state tax credits is a screaming good value for what it offers. If the design does not turn you off.

This is where Tesla’s advantage of having their own battery factories prove to be an advantage. It’s going to be difficult for any car brand come anywhere close to Tesla’s cost, and consequently price.

I just went to a Volvo dealer to take a look at the EX30, and it was nice. But, when comparing its price to a Model 3 or Y, the specs just don't compare remotely. There’s an immediate known cost to go to another brand if I wanted to hate getting another Tesla.
I don't know the Volvo well, so this may not be a comparable car, but VW ID-4s qualify for the full tax credit, in case you weren't aware.

I agree that R2s seem unlikely to land in the same market as CTs.

The initial R2 is almost definitely not a truck. I do hope they add a small truck to that line as well, but this is the best look we have of its shape so far. Hard to tell much from it, but it appears to be a lower boxy SUV that is smaller than an S?

A few things. Yeah, it is funny. The two baseball-breaks in the Tesla windows came with excellent comic timing, for instance.

The Cybertruck is meant to be threatening, though. Not metaphysically, but here and now physically. All those sharp angles and the bulletproof thing are features for bullies, in 2000's America. it's a natural reaction to want to take a bully down.

But the other thing that I find troubling - I look at people who want to drive in such settings as vandals. It's weirdly at odds with the EV mentality to me. I want a pick-up because I can take bikes in the back and go places without the large footprint. Part of the Rivian image seems more comfortable than I am with a big footprint.

Acknowledging here that this video was apparently a fan video, not a Rivian-produced feature. Indeed, the drive up the side of a mountain could have been the tip-off that this was an adolescent fantasy.
This reaction makes me want to buy a cybertruck, TBH. It's a vehicle; there's no such thing as a "vehicle for bullies," and that assertion is absurd. Also, you need to drop stuff like "EV mentality" if you want mass adoption. I don't know if you know this, but your views are NOT mainstream. If you wish to appeal to the masses, don't expect them to conform to your views.

I can't speak for anyone else here, but I did not buy the R1 for the "EV mentality" more accurate would be I bought the R1 despite that sort of attitude. Overall, the" I'm better than you because I care about the environment and my footprint attitude" is an EXTREME turn-off for many people in the mainstream. If Rivian doesn't crunch enough granola for you, chances are you are the person I'm talking about.

You're just making shit up for a web board. There's not a bone in your body that wants to buy a CT.

There wasn't, until I read your post. That's what I'm telling you, the sort of attitude you displayed there is such a major turn off to people like myself that you will push people away from what you want them to do. That environmental smugness is something most people try to distance themselves from, and I do not like people assuming I am someone like that because I own an EV. So that attitude is a BARRIER to adoption for most mainstream people judging by all the people who assume "I am one of those" and the social relief I see them express when they find out I'm not.

I am quick to identify myself as "not one of those" when people ask and that's almost the first thing people ask when they find out I have an EV. People who are aware of that attitude worry about being associated with it. To be clear, there's nothing wrong with caring about the environment. Where the problem comes into play is thinking that you're somehow better than everyone esle becasue of it or that environmentalism is your entire personality. Most people simply aren't that involved and the people who are usually are too preachy about it.

I'm very curious why you think there's no way R2 will be $40k? Based on scale, improved process, and in house components I think it's very feasible and it's a huge part of their strategy to build towards a million+ vehicles per year.

The question to me will be what features and/or tech from R1 will make it over into R2 at that price point.
Hey...I think we'll know very soon as the R2 gets introduced in Q1, 2024...and Im assuming they'll start taking reservations thereafter..RJ made a pricing error once before..He doesn't strike me as the kind of individual that makes the same mistake twice...and he's definitely an underpromise, over deliver guys....Wall street has taught him about that !!!! We'll see but very excited to see the R2 intro, along with features, specs etc..They've done a good job keeping it underrwraps...and R2 is the vehicle for the masses which brings Rivian into the big league...They will/can't not screw this up!!

I agree with the OP.
I originally placed a reservation for the CT primarily based on its low price. Now that the high price and somewhat disappointing specs are revealed I have cancelled that reservation. (and it's still ugly)
I need to replace a 23 year old Land Rover that has close to 200,000 miles. It still runs just fine but I don't know how long it will last.
I placed a reservation for the R1S as a replacement but I don't need a large (or expensive) car. I think the R2S would be a good replacement.
I hope the Land Rover doesn't die in the meantime.

That’s funny. So, you think the Max Pack for $10,000 to add 50 miles at most is an over deliver kind of thing?

What is your rough guess as to what the pricing and spec will be for the R2S?

Obviously I don't know.
I'm hoping for less than $50,000 (before incentives).
Specs?
Smaller, lighter, more efficient, 2 row. Probably similar to Tesla Model Y but more off-road capable (ground clearance, etc.)

I'm guessing the r2s will be a more compact version of the R1S and seating for 5. It will compete with the model Y. Likely dual motor with off-road capability that the Y doesn't have. Half the ecu's and technology complexity of the r1 including a simplified suspension; possibly a more conventional air setup. I think the y is the best selling vehicle right now and sloting that segment gives rivian their best chance. Give it the rugged capability look that most people don't use, like all the jeep and Toyota truck buyers, and it will be popular. There are only so many people that will stomach a $100k price and they will be quickly dwindling.

If it’s going to be under $50K before incentives, I’d say it’s going to be a significantly stripped down version of the R1S. No air suspension is a given. RWD for $50K. Dual motor will be over $50K.

My WAG is the dual motor R2 will be $65K before the fed tax credit. Sadly, $65K is entry level nowadays....
