started to snow in Oklahoma for the first time since I've got my R1S. I put it in snow mode and it did fine. it was a light snow with a small amount (less than 1 inch) accumulation on the road. As I pulled into my neighborhood, the car went to zero and as i pushed the accelerator, about every 8-10 seconds it would give me a 1 second burst of acceleration (gauge would go to 6,8,11mph) and then back to zero and accelerator pedal would do nothing. Got it back out today. roads have been cleared BUT same problem. dash is showing an orange car with circle around it and intermittent car with slide marks behind it. I made sure it was back in normal mode, but did not change anything. barely INCHED my way home. it is acting like my dog when I try and put it out to dump in the snow. NO GO. Very disappointed in what was going to be the car our family depended on in poor conditions. Hopefully someone can help me out and it was just a wrong setting somewhere.

Was it a turtle in an orange circle? The other intermittent one is slip warning. Was it icy? Did you try changing drive modes to see if any others worked?

Even if you pin the accelerator, traction control will prevent it from putting down power if it detects wheel slip unless you limit or turn off stability control.

I can't think of a setting that would cause it to do this. If the tires were actually losing traction it would definitely restrict additional power being sent to those wheels. That doesn't explain the other warning light. Does it go away or is it now permanently on the display? A pic would help if possible. If you drive on a clear paved section does it perform normally?

I've driven on some pretty bad roads here in CO this winter and I haven't experienced what you describe.

If you hit the brakes do you immediately get ABS activation? Could be an ABS sensor issue.

Even on pure ice I've never experienced what you have.

What was the battery temperature in the gauge view? Sounds like it started up in turtle mode which vastly limits power and driving speed.

Did you try turning stability control off? I'd be curious if it would allow slip then and if it is an issue with an ABS sensor.

The statement that surprises me a little is “car to depend on in poor conditions”. I just don’t think a brand new car company with a brand new model as an EV in winter conditions should be awarded that statement, as much as I’d like Rivian to be in a solid place where such statements would be warranted.

I do sympathize with the pain of having a new car with issues though.

Gotta love the "HELP NOTHING WORKS" posts with no photos... Even Rivian requires photos when submitting tickets, so folks, please include photos of your problems!

Battery, drive mode, and most importantly show us the dash errors popping up. This sounds like turtle mode, totally unrelated to the weather.

I wouldn't say unrelated. Kyle at OoS showed a pic of his truck starting up with the battery showing 9F and it started in turtle mode. Just saying it's possible. But yes...it's like folks who post somewhere saying their Check Engine Light (CEL) is on in their ICE car and asking someone to help troubleshoot over the internet. Literally impossible without knowing what code is being thrown.

Also strike me strange the high numbers of frantic posts looking to strangers on internet for help, instead of going to Support first, then internet to compare notes or share lessons learned. Almost like calling random strangers across state lines when house is on fire, instead of local 911. Illogical. Too easy to dismiss as attempts to torpedo Rivian’s reputation.

Sounds like when my front passenger axle slipped out(?) of the drive unit...couple months ago now. ATL SC towed it and repeated it, no issue since.

The turtle mode would show up if I was driving, but once vehicle went to park and started to drive again it would be clear, but once it noticed a slip in the wheel response when I was pressing the go pedal, it would turtle once again.

yes "turtle mode" icon was on. I described this to online service and they did not seem to know what I was talking about. They had me reset the car, spend an hour in sleep mode and it was still doing this. their next move was scheduling a tow and taking for service. it as not icy where I was driving although I did drive initially over about 1 inch of snow for 1 block to get to the plowed, dry road.

turtle mode was permanent. car with sliding would come on and off as the car went back into acceleration
