Dual vs Dual performance

I’m looking into purchasing a R1S and I’m deciding between the Dual or Dual performance.

I will primarily be using it for road driving and maybe the occasional dirt road, gravel road or snowy road.

I’m also not too concerned about high performance or speed. I currently have a Tesla Y and the standard pickup and speed is plenty for me.

For these reasons, the standard dual seems like the logical choice however I live near a beach that allows you to drive on and I’d be interested in trying this out. The $5000 upgrade seems like a lot for the occasional beach trip so my question is how well will the standard dual engine perform on sand? Will deflating the tires a little be enough? Do you really NEED the performance or quad with soft sand mode? Has anyone brought a standard dual on sand or off road that is more recommended for the performance of quad engine?

My subjective opinion is you're going to be fine w/o the performance. Just practice good sand driving technique and no worries. Also, word on the street is that the performance package will be availalbe for upgrade purchase at a later date.

Sand mode or not, I would not expect the Quad to do any better in the sand for normal person activities.

The quad's torque vectoring in sand mode could be a benefit for someone trying to maximize cornering performance in a high speed desert race, but if you are just trying to not get stuck in the sand when you go out for a beachside picnic, the dual will perform just as good if not better (better if it is lighter) than the quad.

I have a base dual motor R1T with all terrain. It has soft sand.

can also confirm that my non-performance DM R1T has soft sand mode, as well.
and, that it is definitely able to both drive on and get out of soft sand without issue.
i'd put the $5k toward something else...like tint/PPF and running boards.

The standard a dual will have identical performance on the sand. The extra performance comes in when your on road under hard acceleration.

In your case the standard dual motor should be fine. The 0-60 will be slightly faster than a long range model Y at 4.5 second vs the 4.8 of the model Y.

Not really related but: when I configured, standard dual was not available and I had to select performance. I'm (supposedly) on the cusp of getting my R1S, and I'd love to save $5000 -- can I downgrade to standard dual?

That was exactly my thinking as well. The guy at the dealership was recommending the performance because it has the soft sand mode but I would imagine the standard would do just fine. Thanks for your input.

I agree. I feel the standard will do fine. Sand mode on the performance and Quad probably for more extreme conditions. Thanks for your input.

That's interesting. So even though it doesn't advertise for soft sand mode, your standard has it? The guy at the dealer was recommending the performance because it had the soft sand mode. I probably can't count on my standard definitely having it.

In another thread, but entirely expected, the Performance upgrade will be available as a purchase/OTA update for standard dual motors. There is nothing else different between the vehicles - no better brakes, tires, suspension or other hard bits that you might expect in a Performance upgrade.

Yes. I agree the performance will perform better for speed and acceleration on hard road. The guy at the dealership was recommending the performance because it has soft sand mode while the dual standard does not. I would imagine they wouldn't necessarily be identical on sand but my thinking is will the standard be good enough since I'm not planning any extreme sand conditions. Thanks for your input.
