I hope they don’t, why reinvent the wheel?
KISS principle ought to prevail.
I’d rather they use a proven off the shelf Warn, so parts availability etc is not a concern.

which I’m pretty sure they’ll do. of note, the (expensive!) recovery kit they have in the configurator is all Warn/Factor55 stuff.
An EV, especially one with an offroad intent, should not feel beholden to architecture limitations of the ICE era.

Cool, so my 800v proprietary winch breaks in the middle of nowhere, far from a rivian service centre. Now what?

In fairness, if your 12V traditional one breaks in the middle of nowhere, far from a Rivian service center, what are you doing?

swearing, a lot, then going to the nearest parts house to get what’s needed.

To clarify, I live in the middle of nowhere, effectively. there will not be a rivian service centre here any time soon.

A proprietary winch, presumably made with customized components, on a small number of vehicles isn’t going to be well supported.

it just makes zero sense to remake something like a winch that already exists and is highly refined.

You'd be shocked (pun intentional) to know that most of the non-powertrain electronics on EV's produced by the legacy auto manufacturers remain on 12V. Why? The economics of volume/commodity pricing. I'd be very surprised if Rivian didn't have a significant amount of 12V electronics as well.

Of note, they’re not using a separate 12v battery. Which is great, since those are a pain in other BEVs.
presumably just a transformer for any 12/24/48v(whichever they’re using) stuff.

The motor itself isn't what typically fails, though, afaik. Rivian could build a bespoke winch with custom mount and motor, but license designs from Warn so that all the wear parts and accessories are universal. Best of both worlds.

The use of dedicated 12V batteries cause their own set of problems when combined w/PHEV or BEV vehicles. At a certain point, having a single battery and power supply module to deliver the necessary voltages makes the most sense. There's been plenty of discussion about ICE vehicles switching over to full 48V systems due to the mild hybrid generator/starters, but it hasn't really taken off. As a former audio systems guy, I really wanted to have a 48V supply voltage for my power amps.

I'm surprised no one has really done it, yet. I would think Rivian or one of the startups would have tried. Having a 12V subsystem is fine... But a lead-acid battery seems like odd baggage to carry around -- especially for new designs. Maybe have a capacitor or small Li-Ion/Li-Po battery to keep voltage stable, and step-down from the HV system to the 12V system.

Transformers work for AC... not DC.

For the laymen....

A transformer is equivalent to a resistor or regulator which are the common ways to step down DC.
