Really excited by the next gen R1 announcement today! I'm particularly intrigued by the new autonomy and autonomy plus platforms, as it's what I miss most on long road trips, coming off my Tesla. Any word or idea if the next autonomy evolution will be available for the current gen 1 R1 vehicles, or if this would require a hardware update (if this is even possible)?

Probably not possible on the first gen Rivians based on the upgraded hardware and chipset. Plus, they want to encourage you to buy a new one, right? ;)

It's seems the answer is a very big no. Multiple folks have reported that there are no additional Driver+ features headed for Gen 1 vehicles at this point. Auto lane changes, for instance, have been mentioned specically is not doable.

If part of the mission is sustainability it's counter mission to not let existing owners retrofit as much as possible for a fee obviously. Sad Rivian doesn't see this.

Well, at least we know they won't try to charge us for what we already have if they are not going to improve it. Once I took delivery of my '23 with no driver monitoring camera I knew that this vehicle would never have hands free highway driving.

Haven't seen anything from Marques Brownlee yet.

Are manufactures afraid to give him stuff to test? "Fisker Ocean effect"
He owns (or did own) an R1T so I doubt it.

Browsing their FAQ, it seems that "Driver+" is now an obsolete term limited to G1, and "Rivian Autonomy Platform" is the new term for G2.

https://rivian.com/support/article/...tween-driver-and-the-rivian-autonomy-platform

It seems that the standard features of the "Rivian Autonomy Platform" are currently equivalent to Driver+, but there is going to be "Rivian Autonomy Platform+" which will introduce G2 exclusive features.

At least Gen1 has enjoyed free lte service. My steering wheel sensors have been out since day 1 so I cannot enjoy lane stay.

What do you do with the old hardware? Gen 2 is almost a complete replacement.

The old hardware? recycle it to the best of my ability, recondition it as refurbished parts for repairs for those who chose not to pay for retrofits? These aren't new problems the automotive industry has been doing exactly this for decades. When I buy an upgraded part for a legacy vehicle I can almost always return the original and get a "core" charge back so it can be reconditioned and re-sold unless it's a wear item. Gen 2 is not almost a complete replacement. the cameras could be replaced if not the cameras and mirrors outright as well as the autonomy computer itself which is distinct from the infotainment computer. There are most certainly things that could not be retrofitted but mostly it's because they didn't design them to be retrofittable not because they "couldn't" be designed to be retrofittable.

It's infeasible. It might be technically possible but the expense and work involved, you're better off getting a new vehicle.

Rivian cheaped out on the hardware and cameras for gen 1. Really glad I traded in my R1T a few months ago. The new hardware and cameras look a lot better.

Argue what you will, Rivian advertised certain capabilities would come to R1s (gen 1) prior to even delivering the first vehicle. They are going to open themselves up to a vast amount of expensive ligation to go back on announced, upcoming, features that may or may not have enticed someone to buy one of their vehicles.
