Nothing in that image shows it's infeasible to retrofit existing R1's to not be an upgrade dead end. It's lazyness and counter to the mission of sustainability and ecological responsibility. And if Rivian is abandoning those ideals give me my tank turn

You should just drive your vehicle until the wheels fall off, unmodified, if you're worried about Rivian's mission.

Really excited by the next gen R1 announcement today! I'm particularly intrigued by the new autonomy and autonomy plus platforms, as it's what I miss most on long road trips, coming off my Tesla. Any word or idea if the next autonomy evolution will be available for the current gen 1 R1 vehicles, or if this would require a hardware update (if this is even possible)?
They said no upgrades for gen 1.

I've driven every vehicle I've ever owned until it died of old age. Not a one unmodified. Is that supposed to be some sort of dig?

What do you do with the old hardware? Gen 2 is almost a complete replacement.
Just like us, my friend, one day this too shall pass. We will all be gone, along with our old gen 1 R1s. No one will remember. We will be a fleeting memory in the sands on time. Just joking. I love the old hardware! It's more than enough for me. There will always be something new. Cheers!

I am already seriously wishing that my R1T was upgradeable (like my 2018 Model 3 was upgraded with a new FSD computer). Very bummed about this.

That said, it has nothing to do with sustainability. You or me trading in for a new vehicle has zero impact on the lifecycle of our current vehicles. They just find a home with a different owner until the wheels fall off. Pretty much all vehicles are driven until they die (and are resold 3-4 times), it is just a question of who drives them. The lack of upgradability means an economic ding for Gen 1 owners, but unless somenone wrecks it, the vehicle will still be zipping around in someone's neighborhood in 2045 just like any typical new vehicle put on the road today.

Respectfully disagree. 1G R1's are going to see significant depreciation both because of the changes and the cost (eg perceived higher insurance costs vs competing vehicles including many non-evs) and Most used vehicles end up on dealership lots as trade-ins, so what happens when they don't sell on used car lots? they either get exported, parted out or sold for scrap. Given that Rivian still isn't a super recognized brand they're going to be harder to sell on used lots than many of us would expect so a higher proportion than any of us would be comfortable with are going to depreciate enough to get scrapped , shipped or parted out. None of which is great for sustainability. Sure plenty will live on as used vehicles but I think you'd probably be disgusted at how many won't

Probably not possible on the first gen Rivians based on the upgraded hardware and chipset. Plus, they want to encourage you to buy a new one, right? ;)
It's seems the answer is a very big no. Multiple folks have reported that there are no additional Driver+ features headed for Gen 1 vehicles at this point. Auto lane changes, for instance, have been mentioned specically is not doable.
Any links or sources where it’s been said that nothing else is coming for Gen 1 vehicles? Not arguing the point it’d just be helpful to know.

It was in Kyle's two hour long video and a post on here by Quinn Nelson - Snazzy Labs. both attended the launch event.

Argue what you will, Rivian advertised certain capabilities would come to R1s (gen 1) prior to even delivering the first vehicle. They are going to open themselves up to a vast amount of expensive ligation to go back on announced, upcoming, features that may or may not have enticed someone to buy one of their vehicles.
Indeed they did. Hard to believe the 1.5 year old hardware is already incapable of new features. But it is what it is. I don't think there was any intended misleading, but still disappointing.

They're still advertising features coming to Driver+ on the current (live) website, even though what they said today seems to conflict with that, and I think the deactivation & removal of the driver attention monitoring camera a while back made it pretty clear that hands free was never going to come to the existing Gen 1 hardware.

I'm still holding out a little bit of hope that they will add these (or the fear of litigation will lead them to offer a paid path to upgrade to compute / vision hardware like Tesla did with HW4), but only time will tell.

Exactly. Personally I'd be happy and have no complaints with the current state of things if they at least found a way to deliver on these existing promises for G1 owners

I want the summon feature or whatever others call it. Something that can just forward or back into parking sports (straight forward/backwards)
