Second Generation R1S has a totally new suspension to fix the issue. T got new parts as well to stop the squeaking and chirping over bumps. Apparently both S and T are much, much better. I doubt new parts will be backwards compatible... but that remains to be seen. Fingers crossed. Or time to trade in for the newer model.

It would be AMAZING if we could upgrade our GEN1 R1S with the new updated parts to help improve the ride quality.

It will have a conventional coil over suspension. No adjustable dampers or ride height.
Not entirely correct, It will have springs, but per shots of the infotainment, there are suspension compression settings (firm and soft as an example) but you're correct, there is no air or ride height adjustable suspension

I have clunking. I had it when I got my truck. They replaced the front and rear subframes. It seemed like it was better for a while, but it came back. I think it's in the design and the lack of ICE engine noise to cover it up really makes it obvious.

I don't have hopes for it ever being fixed on the gen 1 trucks.
I owned a Model 3, and currently own a EV6, none of these clunking issues on them.

They both have very nice suspensions.

The clucking to me sounds like the strut is not torque correctly on the top. I don’t have the time nor care to chase it, R1 is a lease, Rivian can mess with it, or the next owner.

The original cutaway I saw didn't show that, so nice update.

With another upcoming appointment in a few weeks I decided to see if I could locate the source of my 'clunk' since the time I asked Rivian to look at it they reported that the clunk was "N"ormal.

The clunk and suspension noise and harsh feel is the result of excessive play in the front driver half shaft where the shaft mates with the drive unit (see video). Passenger side appears to be fine.

As a bonus I also found that one of my front drive units is leaking oil. Exciting for having 7k miles on the truck

Definitely show them this video so it's on record. And thanks for posting. Apparently the refresh solved this issue.

Yup, attached it to the service quote. I am sure they will take care of it now… just frustrating that when I first requested them to take a look at specifically the half shafts and demonstrated the clunk when going over bumps they said it was Normal. Again, sure they will sort it now that I had to pull apart the underside and fully illustrate the failure.

I've had half shafts and hubs done on the front. Quieted it down mostly, but still occasional clunk when starting out. I've often thought its caused by the brake hold sticking or not in sync with the right side.

The tulip joint is held in with a circlip. Unless the clip is not retaining the shaft, there's likely nothing that can be done. Have to put it on a lift. They usually float like that. The other side might be under tension. Could also be a manufacturing tolerance issue. There is a seal which tends to leak at the rivian tulip.

I always thought the clunk was related to the air struts but yes it could be the driveshafts moving in and out at the drive units.

Subframe?
No, it's play in the half shaft—see previous posts in the thread—which is what Rivian's ting washer recall aimed to address (but not a permanent fix).
