TL;DR - does anyone know how to go about having Performance added to a dual motor config pre-delivery?

Right now I'm looking at switching from a custom order R1T to a shop R1S to take advantage of the current inventive. 3 "non negotiables" for me are
  1. Dual Performance
  2. Ocean Coast interior
  3. Premium Audio.

The problem is there seem to be VERY few shop vehicles with that particular combination. Seems like a "pick 2" kind of situation.

My ideal would be to find something that fits what I want physically, and then just have the service center add performance pre-delivery. When I asked the customer service rep on the phone about that she just told me that Rivian is planning to make it an option for both Gen 1 and Gen 2 to upgrade from dual to dual performance post delivery. But I know better than to expect that in any reasonable time frame. Anyone know how to go about this?

I had this same problem with the shop orders. Pick 2 is an excellent way to describe it, or pick 3 rather, if you consider exterior color.

I was told to just get non performance since Rivian said they were going to allow it for purchase later. But since that hasnt been made official and I didn't want a nebulous future date that could slip, I opted to make the 20" the concession since I know I can always just buy the set at any time from the shop.

It's not that I don't trust Rivian, but they have a history of changing deliverables, albeit well-intentionally. To be safe, and especially if you have the 9/30 deadline, you may need to make another concession for your list.

They said they couldn't do it pre-delivery?

When I picked my R1T up back in June, they were able to swap the wheels pre-delivery since I was also looking for a particular config, and what I found checked most of the boxes. I'd think a software change would be even easier.

Yeah that's the hard part - of the 3 things on my non-negotiable list, the only one that can be added later is the performance software. But I'm with you, with how fast things change at Rivian (and how long some software seems to take) I would rather not rely on that.

That's the thing. It CAN and has been done. But for some reason they won't do it anymore (at least according to the costumer service rep). I'm still waiting on a phone call from a sales rep who hopefully knows something more?

I'm counting on being able to upgrade via SW as well. Your requirements are same as mine and I couldn't find a performance model to buy from the factory.

Did you end up finding a non performance? Or are you still on the hunt?

I just picked one from the shop this past weekend, decided to just give up ocean coast to get everything else i wanted...forest green (had a few color choices), DM-perf, all-terrain upgrade, premium audio.
I pick it up August 17th already, on it's way from normal factory to Franklin TN next week.
I too was debating about passing on the performance upgrade and get it later. my guide told me the intent is there to offer a software upgrade at a later date, but it's not available now, and no specific timeline. I also had a voucher to use, so i figured to just pick the performance upgrade now instead of waiting and not knowing timeline or cost to upgrade later.

no specific timeline.
This is the part that worries me. Given how long it's taking for Google Cast - who knows how long this one will take, or if it will happen at all.

When we picked up our 21" R1S in February 2024, we wanted 22" wheels ASAP in order to mount 3PMSF winter tires right away. This required a special procedure.

As I recall, (1) Wheels are considered "gear" (I think) rather than "parts." (2) Rivian routes "gear" and "parts" through two different ordering systems. (3) Rivian's system will not order the category that includes wheels, unless the order is linked to a current Rivian owner. (4) We wouldn't be "current Rivian owners" until we accepted delivery of our first Rivian vehicle.

I argued that this was a stupid restriction! If a customer wants to make a legal purchase, why not figure out a way to make it happen? But nobody could figure out how to make this happen in the computer. (As we all know, computers are great servants but miserable masters....)

Portland Service Center (PSC) figured out a workaround. (We are SO blessed to have Portland as our nearest Service Center!) PSC had a set of 22" wheels on site, which had been ordered by someone else and not claimed. They put a big sign on that set to the effect of: "Don't sell these to anyone but Dave Cundiff! He's arriving February 16th!" After we took delivery of the R1S, Rivian's computers would process the sale and we drove off with new wheels....

I'm glad you had a smoother experience, @beatle!

The simple answer is that the “performance” upgrade via software is (planned) to be coming but is not yet available so neither a buyer nor a service center can perform the upgrade. Either wait until you find the vehicle you want or (try to) have faith that the software upgrade is forthcoming sOOn

nor a service center can perform the upgrade
I'm really hoping Rivian doesn't hold a hard line on this one, especially given that my service center has done it numerous times before with Gen 1 Vehicles

I had my delivery date “delayed” as they did the software upgrade to go to Performance. So it is possible - I just don’t know how much effort it involves for them?

Our experience.

We ordered a shop R1T (Performance/Max) in mid May and picked it up at the end of the month.

In our pre-delivery inspection we discovered that ‘performance’ was not on the vehicle. We pointed this out to the delivery guide. Literally “no issue and we are really sorry.”

He walked into the SC, got a tech who came out with some equipment and in less than 5 minutes it was upgraded.

One would think this shouldn’t be an issue for you…?

I had a service tech who was fixing my truck tell me that the upgrade to performance is really easy. Rivian HQ has to update your profile to the performance and then the tech can install a computer to the car and install the upgrade. He said it takes 5 mins to do. He's done it plenty of times. Last quarter, Rivian pushed out a lot of free upgrades, and the Performance upgrade was one of them.

I'm also waiting for this option to open up, so I can get the upgrade. Rivian has been pretty tight lipped about when they will allow this. Pretty annoying as they can literally do this today and say "2k to upgrade". They'd make a ton of money...
