Hi,

Quick question: I enrolled in the Tesla charging membership through the Tesla app using the same email as my Rivian account. When I tried using one of the Tesla chargers, my R1S started charging immediately without letting me choose on the Tesla app. In the end, I received an invoice from Rivian with a non-membership charging rate. Am I doing something wrong?

Yes. You need to start the charge in the Tesla app before plugging it into the Rivian.

This is how it works in case your curious. Plug and charge bills through your Rivian account at the regular non-member rate. Its like the magic dock chargers when you activate for a non-tesla.

You can remove the payment method from the Rivian app (in account section) so it doesn't happen by accident. Otherwise Rivian will start charging using the payment in the Rivian app.

Can you easily turn on and off the Tesla Membership like on EA? I would use Tesla Superchargers only while on road trips.

Yes. On/off is easy. Payoff is approximately 110kw which is pretty easy to meet in the span of a month.

So do we have to pay the $13 a month to use the Tesla app billing? I don't see a way to charge or select a station in the app at all and don't have the paid version.

To use the Tesla app to charge your Rivian, you use the hamburger (3 lines) menu in the top right of the app, then select Charge Your Other EV. From there, select the Supercharger from the map and the Charge Here. To use the Tesla app and discounted pricing, you must initiate the charging session from the Tesla app BEFORE you plug into your Rivian.

The only reason to use the Tesla app instead of the plug-and-charge feature with billing through Rivian. If you don’t have the Tesla membership, you pay the same price for charging no matter if you bill through Rivian or use the Tesla app. The only way to get the discounted membership pricing is to initiate the session with the Tesla app.

Thank you all for the information. I made a mistake. I chatted with Rivian customer service, and they told me to just plug it in with no need to use the Tesla app. They said my Tesla account, which is linked to the same email as my Rivian account, would automatically adjust. However, that was incorrect. I tested it by just plugging in and noticed I was charged at a non-member rate. After receiving advice from "emoore" on the Rivian forum on how to use it, I tested it again the next day, and it worked. The only issue is that Canadians are facing a problem where the Tesla app forces them to use a U.S. address before enabling the charging button. I used my sister's address in the U.S., and it worked

I'm in Canada and set up my Tesla account with a Canadian address... I didn't have any problems enabling Tesla chargers from the app. Not sure why you had to you use a US address...

Incidentally, it is the same with Ford: you have to use the app to start the session, not plug & charge, to get the membership pricing.

Yes but the membership is for a month at a time…so if you shut it off, you don’t get a pro-rated refund, and retain access to the member pricing until the end of your membership month
