Telsa and Rivian are fundamentally the same. They both use liquid for the cooling/heating loops and have a radiator to air exchange excess heat, and if a heat pump system, to also extract heat from the air.

Tesla has a liquid cooled condenser LCC. The frunk in model y never had a heat issue. The condenser there is located on the firewall. In the rivian the condenser is located up front.

The Model Y system is discussed here:

Yup, you can see the R1 condenser/heat exchanger right behind the front grill. Literally same spot as in the cutaway of the Tesla. Was checking out the front of our R1S last night and thought it was funny to have what looks like a small ICE radiator right there. I knew what it was for but that prompted me to start this thread today. That location is an obvious spot if you want it to be exposed to the most effective cooling possible.

Great article (esp for us nerds). But I think the cutaway is still correct and there's still that radiator (what they call heat exchanger, same thing) at an angle at the front. The Model Y LCC is mounted to the firewall but eventually that is still "cooled" by the radiator at the front. Something still has to cool the liquid....

Correct, but it still has a radiator (lower right below). The LCC transfers heat between loops in the car, the radiator is an air source heat exchanger to dump excess heat, and to absorb air heat in low temp heating mode.

True its still cooled but somehow Tesla's strategy results in a frunk that isn't affected like this in hot weather.

I believe Tesla fan pulls the air towards the ground where the Rivian is pulling the air up, around the frunk tub, and then out the vent holes in the wheel well.

I live in New England so putting things in the frunk in winter isn’t a problem, but in summer I make sure to put heat-tolerant items. Supermarket is five minutes away so if not too hot out I’ll use the frunk.

On our first road trip this summer my youngest’s bag was in the frunk, and her handful of gummy vitamins came out as one big blob. I cut it up with a knife so she could eat them during the trip!

It is great for keeping my take out warm. Especially pizza!

We’ve had our Gen1 R1S for about a week now, still looking for excuses to drive it every chance I get ?. One thing I have noticed is that the Frunk seems overly hot. So much so that I don’t want to put any perishables in there (groceries, etc.). I haven’t stuck a temp sensor in there yet to get an accurate reading but wanted to get opinions if this is normal. I think the build date is March/April 2024 so I think it’s one of the last Gen 1’s produced (if that makes any difference).
I mentioned the same thing a few weeks ago and my favorite comment was something like, “it’s where I put the take out pizza“
BRILLIANT!

And the same thing happened to my gummies, but they weren’t vitamins?

Hope you didn't eat the whole glob at once!

There are all the technical reasons for it to get hot in the frunk while the car is running listed above in this thread. Then there’s the simpler point that it’s a metal box that sits in the sun and you live in Hawaii. Yup, that’s gonna get hot!

We have found that the drunk is the Perfect place to stash take out food. Keeps the food warm on the way home and we don’t have to get into a vehicle the next day that stinks like old pizza, Chinese, etc

Like others here, I've been used to putting all kinds of food in my Tesla MY frunk because (1) it's easier to clean in case of spills, (2) it keeps smells out of the cabin, and (3) it stays cold. With the R1T, I'm learning to put cold things in the gear tunnel because the frunk does get warm, even in San Francisco, and especially when charging.

One thing I realized about the gear tunnel: even with the armrest access door closed, there is still air exchange with the cabin. A few weeks ago, I left an unopened bag of dog kibble in the tunnel overnight and the whole truck smelled like kibble the next morning. That's another reason to put your pizza or Chinese takeout in the frunk.
