The title says it all, folks! Rivian has invited me to moderate a Q&A fireside chat with Wassym Bensaid this Wednesday, November 20th, at their Cars & Coffee event at the LA Auto Show. I'm here to ask for questions you have that you'd like me to ask!

Got questions you'd like me to ask? Wassym is an open book on most topics, so feel free to ask about the R1 lineup, the upcoming R2/R3 platforms, or Rivian’s past and future plans. While I can’t guarantee an answer to anything, I’ve been told I can ask just about everything!

These 3 items I touched on previously seem to have caught a good deal of interest among us. Can you ask if we'll get some and when we'll get Cast?

- Google Cast (When)

- A proper Energy use app in the vehicle, not just trip computers/last 15 mins (trying not to say similar to the Tesla one, but yes, similar to the tesla one) Is one on the road map for Gen 1/2

- Store music offline natively. The ability to allocate a portion of the external gear guard/dashcam SSD in my console to storing offline playlists from Tidal/Spotify when off-roading or in areas without service. I have a 1 TB SSD, let me partition a portion to that end. Please Wassym... Please!

When can we expect:
Teen driver mode
Valet mode
User configurable tire sizes
Google casting

Software switches for accessories similar to the HUMMER, probably would need another hardware module for relays.

How about a Google play store integration with curated apps for faster app enablement instead of Rivian having to customize their own apps.

A few for me:

He mentioned a third party app API in a previous interview. When will this be available and can anyone build apps for the system? I.e. will there be a fee...how do people upload/debug apps...is there a certification process?

How is Rivian hunting down all the mysterious reboot issues?

Is Rivian improving Gear Guard so it captures car movement or has a continuous low frame rate recording mode? Is Rivian aware that it does not capture accidents even when it's on?

For the Dual Motor vehicles, can they enable an automatic switch to AWD when turning (greater than a certain approx g. force [degree angle of the wheels per speed] )? It'll help reduce understeer and even out tire wear on acceleration out of the corner.

Right now, I have to switch to reduced traction control to get that effect. It'd be nice if it was there by default. I'm not the only one that says it feels sluggish. But, it also messes up the nice balance of the car to be FWD all the time.

I second this. And it seems like something they can do without getting any external support. Google Cast will certainly be nice, but I'm sure there are a lot of tests and agreements that must be completed for that to come out. And even accessing stored music is a cybersecurity concern. So, that brings in lawyers. But changing the GUI for the energy usage just seems like a simple UI improvement that would need to be approved only by the UI people.

I have a Model 3. I really miss having an energy usage summary of each drive.
Also, it seems like the 15 minute window shows the current value as the average of the last 15 minutes. Then the window shows those data points for the last 15 minutes. It seems like it's double averaged. The graph should just show the raw usage over distance. I'm really not sure who cares about it as over time.

Also, the energy graph of the expected usage over the trip and the actual is really nice. Tesla had their old graph for a long time that needed work. When they reworked it, it got a lot better. Please don't wait as long as Tesla to improve the energy usage UI's.

I would like to know when V2H (bi-directional charging) will be turned on and if they will build a dedicated home charger/inverter for this (I think he said previously that they would but didn’t know if plan has changed). Thx!!

What's the long term life cycle plan of the Rivian software platform?

Software, or high tech in general, moves at a different pace than mechanical devices like a vehicle. At what point will something like a Gen1 R1 be out of support?

I'm really interested how this is answered because it ties with Rivian's ethos of "keeping the world adventurous forever" and sustainability. I can drive an ICE vehicle for 20+ years with regular maintenance and upkeep. I would be crazy to keep a smartphone that long.

Ever since we took R1S delivery in Aug 2023, the front passenger airbag goes on and off due to my wife weight. She is 105 lbs and even after Rivian telling her that she is not sitting correctly, and have her sat differently, the safety airbag is off most of the time.

After three attempts to get it corrected by the service center and the mobile service, they always say its within the specs and the reason the airbag is off is because to the child car seat issue.

Here's the thing. If an adult gets in fastens the seat belt, there should be an option to force the airbags to be active while the seatbelt is fastened continuously.

I was told the SW team is looking into it and that was over a year ago. Many, many firmwares have been released since.

The problem is not unique to my wife. There as been multiple reports of the similar problems but most people weighs more than 105 lbs so its not common.

I have filed a complaint with NHTSA on this and Rivian has so far done nothing to remedy the situation. They just say it's within the regs/spec.

Regardless of the spec, Rivian needs to address the issue - however small the problem population may be - so that peoples safety is not compromised.

What are the plans for long term support for Gen 1? Why does it feel like Gen 1 owners are getting left behind when we were told the hardware had plenty of room to grow? Should we expect any more meaningful updates for Driver+ or has it been deprecated?

What does he say to Gen 1 owners who feel they have been abandoned from a Driver+/autonomy standpoint?
