A few people have noticed the subtle inclusion in the Gen 1 patch notes:

  • Comfort and Usability:
    • Enhanced seat climate icons now adjust based on external temperature.
    • Ride height adjustments improved for uneven surfaces.
    • Enhanced acceleration in All-Purpose mode.

I'm a little curious what exactly it means. There have been a few discussion points around people being generally disappointed that you need to be in Sport mode to actually utilize all the power at your disposal and that it was pushing people away from performance upgrades or tri/quad motors. I personally don't like the ride quality in Low and needing to be in sport was a turnoff for me, since I'd basically hardly ever use it. I know I'm not alone there either.

Did Rivian pay attention to this and do something about it?

This is a rare case of where I think I would accept it if this was done purely to sell more performance upgrades, especially the in-theory-coming-soon post-purchase unlocks for dual motor owners, or to just sell more tris and quads to people who have been wondering why to bother over a dual motor when there's not much difference between them in all-purpose where they do most of their driving.

I'm afraid to pin too much hope in it being an actual increase to available power in All-Purpose, but this is the first time anything in the patch notes has caused me to raise an eyebrow and say You Have My Attention.

As I said in the other thread:

I would hope it's enhanced as in faster... but it could also mean "enhanced" as in more stable, and reliable, which could mean slower.. Why didnt they just say "faster acceleration" to reduce ambiguity? lol

I am in sport all the time too unless I know the pavement will be total crap. I might go in conserve mode if on the highway for at least 10 miles.

Personally, I don’t need or want any more power than my quad R1T already has. It is stupid frickin’ fast!!! However, I would like the accelerator pedal to be more responsive - more like in sport mode. As it is, in all purpose mode, it seems to require just a tad to much throw to get going, a little lazy. I drove a loaner R1T that had a much more responsive feel to the pedal. Not sure how it ended up that way, but it was really nice, noticeably more rewarding to drive. Some may like the softer feel. That’s cool. Rivian should make this a driver selectable feature, like the suspension, regen, and stability settings.

Mine lives in sport mode, just like my last one did. I could see in a place with bad roads having that not be an option though.
I used low and sport in Seattle when the truck was first delivered for all of 10 seconds, then I remembered why was happy for a rugged SUV before the Rivian. Not for wild off-roading, but for the absolutely shitty roads everywhere.

The notes now say

Improved acceleration response in All-Purpose drive mode.

Put me in the camp that *DOES NOT* want a sharper throttle mapping. Something close to linear still gives you all the power when you want it, but gives you far finer control over throttle inputs. If it's too sharp, you lose all that fine fidelity and the vehicle becomes much harder to control anywhere the limit or to be smooth...your passengers would likely prefer a less sharp throttle. My biggest gripe with sport mode in many cars these days is that the throttle mapping is too damn sharp and most don't offer a custom mode to be able to pick all the sporty bits with a softer throttle map or softer suspension, etc. Even worse is the early days when they were refining the throttle map it made developing muscle memory difficult since every update was slightly different.

I think there may be some subtle differences between vehicles, as I noticed with the loaner I drove. It was nothing crazy, but to me it just felt more connected. Clearly it would be a case of different strokes for different folks, just as with regen settings. Some like more. Some like less. Some want none. Why not let the driver decide?

A lot of Rivian software changes are for just change’s sake, there is no rhyme or reason to it. It may be different, but not necessarily better. You need something to distract people from missing features and bugs.

The first thing I noticed about my Gen 2 Tri-Motor on the first day of ownership was the laggy throttle response in comparison to my Gen 1 Quad. There is 200 lb-ft more torque so it should have more punch with instant torque but it takes a heavier right foot to make it go the way I do in the gen 1 Quad, all things being equal. It certainly feels somewhat like turbo lag in an ICE vehicle. I hope this update to Gen 2 improves the throttle response appropriately and make good use of the 1103 lb-ft.

You guys obviously don’t live in the frigid north lol. All roads here are crap or gravel for at least 50% of the year. So if there’s a way to make all-purpose snappier, I’m all for it!
