Hi,

New owner of a 2nd gen R1S and very happy overall. I have a recent issue of the center console not opening. I have only had the car for about a month and all of the sudden the center console won’t open. I don’t have much in the center console so I don’t think any thing inside is preventing the console from opening. The opening mechanism appears defective.
Has anyone had this issue or know of a fix.

I have a mobile service appointment scheduled for the middle of February but it will inconvenient not to be able to use the console until then.

Thanks!

At risk of asking the obvious, have you tried pushing both buttons? I have heard of cases where one of the buttons will stop working, but the other is still ok.

Alternatively - you could also try a full vehicle reset to see if that changes anything.

If you do ever run into any glitches a couple of good tricks to know.

For infotainment computer related issues, push and hold the outside two steering wheel buttons to reboot the infotainment system.

If you are having a glitch or error with another component of the vehicle you can reboot the entire vehicle by holding down the hazard button and the left most steering wheel button

Push both the center console buttons and give is a pull (not hard), they maybe stuck and you can release them. Don't be too hard when you pull, as you have an appointment already.

U had the exact same thing. I personally think it had something to do with me locking and unlocking the door. I did a reset and it worked right away. Do not force it.

Thanks for the reply. I called Rivian and they also had me do a soft and hard reset. Unfortunately for me this didn’t work.

I completely agree that this is an electronic issue. Rivian said if the resets do not work there is nothing else I can do until the mobile service date. I live in the Boston area and there is only 1 service center which could not get me in earlier. Luckily I did not have my wallet in the console.

I assume you have walked away and let it auto lock and go to sleep, then unlock and wake up?

also there is a setting to release the drawer below the console. I wonder if releasing the drawer, pulling all the way out then sliding back in. You affect the console lock.

I've looked into trying to figure out a manual unlock mechanism for the center console if the car lost power or something like this happens. They've done a good job of making it hard to access the lock tabs. In my playing with it, though, I did notice the button responsiveness can be spotty. When you push the buttons, sometimes you need to push pretty hard. If you hold the button, the electronics will hold it in the unlock position. If you don't hear the motors tiggering the unlock, you're pretty stuck. Oh, and each button has its own wiring and either button should trigger both of the sides to unlock. So make sure you try both buttons.

Thanks for your suggestions. I have tried them including the walk and have to car enter sleep mode then wake it up.

I have also pushed the buttons in different positions and holding it down. I don’t hear the locking mechanism engage. It is so weird that both the driver’s side and passenger’s side buttons failed at the same time.

At the risk of asking the obvious:

Have you banged on it with your closed fist 3-5 times and yelled either the F, C, or Z word?
Haha…haven’t tried that yet…but my wife said she did this earlier:)

I think I may be out of luck until mobile service…it is frustrating having to wait 2 months.

Feel free to speak softly to it as well, and pry it open with a crowbar or catspaw. If service asks what happened, tell them your wallet was locked in there.

In my case, mine wasn't broken (I've never had a problem, actually). I was just showing how it's done. But the latches aren't "locked" per-se. The electronics just open the latches, but they're free to move at any time, so opening things manually does not affect how the electronics work.

I had the same issue. Mobile service came out and replaced the lids. It was quite a involved process, but he got it done.

In the mean time, just keep pressing the buttons. This is what I did, and every now and then it would open. Which I needed, as this is where I keep my wallet.
