Hi Guys,

I just bought a 2022 R1T and I have a question about home charging. I am absolutely clueless when it comes to electric. I have the attached cord hardwired that I use for my generator https://www.homedepot.com/p/parkwor...Range-14-50P-to-4-Wires-Black-66402/331249263

Is there some sort of adaptor I can get to charge with until I can get an actual charger installed?
If you're clueless, I would hire an electrician.

BUT, that seems to be a NEMA 14-50P plug and if you have that plug anywhere near your garage, you have what you need to charge your Rivian up-to 40Amps wich is good enough for 99% of the cases. If you have your Rivian mobile charger, that one has a 14-50P cord that will allow you to charge your vehicle.

But again, I would make sure to get an electrician to review your wiring beforehand :)

Thanks! It was installed by an electrician and I'm totally going to consult one for charger install- I just wasn't sure how to connect that cord to my Rivian. I previously had a tesla and the cord for that (if I'm remember correctly) had the end that plugged into the car then a male end to plug into the wall - here I have the male end for the cord so I wasn't sure how to actually connect this cord to my rivian cord.

Can you confirm that you have the outlet in the wall that uses that plug?

If so check in the vehicle, sounds like you purchased used, hopefully they provided the portable charger that came with it. If they did it would plug into that outlet. If not there are chargers you can purchase that would use that outlet.

Here are is an Emporia, I use this one and am happy with it, it will plug into or you can have an electrician hardwire it.

We would need to know more about the plug on the side of your house and how your generator connects to your panel. Typically the outlet on the side of a house for a generator would be male, and you would use a male to female cord to hook up your generator that has female receptacles on it.

Can you show us what you plug the generator into and what it runs to on your panel? You may not be able to turn that inlet on the side of your house into an outlet if you have an interlock on your generator circuit. This would prevent closing the breaker to power your house with the generator unless you have also turned off power at the main breaker.

is there not a mobile charger in the front trunk? Rivian Portable Charger - Gear Shop - Rivian

Mine has a 120 and a 240 mobile charger plug. Simple attach the 240 plug to your mobile charger. Plug one end into the wall, plug the other end into the Rivian charge port.

Thanks for the help everyone. I may not be being clear in my original post. The cord that I have linked to the Home Depot page is all I have. That cord is hard wired into my breaker. I don’t have an outlet. That cord plugs into my generator. I’m looking to see if there is some sort of an adaptor that can connect that cord to the rivian charging cord.

You need a Rivian Portable Charger - Gear Shop - Rivian

You should have one in the front trunk. Lift up the base at the bottom of the trunk.

Sick thanks! I haven’t gotten the truck yet, just preparing, but I assume it comes with one. This can connect to a cord?
LOL. How far is the outlet from where the vehicle parks? If you need an extension cord, just make sure it has the right plug.

LOL - and what are you going to plug it into?

You need a 240v outlet at your house. You can plug into a 120v outlet, but it will charge at about 3 miles an hour. 240 will charge at about 16 miles per hour. Rivian Charger will charge at about 27 miles per hour.

If you don't have a 240v outlet on the side of house or in the garage you will plug into 120v until you get a charger installed or a 240v outlet installed.

Read Rivian Portable Charger - Gear Shop - Rivian

You have to have an outlet to plug one of the two plugs.

You Home Depot is just an extension cord. No idea what you bought it for or use it for. Pulled up the cord for HD. It looks like this is so you can power your house from the generator.

That is power going into the home. You need a 240v outlet in your garage.

How big is the generator? It might charge the Rivian. It must have a 240v outlet on the generator.
