Okay switching gears to a different Q: looks like the push button switch let's you toggle between the EV Play and native rivian UI. Would it be possible to have a second option where the screen is split between both feeds active at the same time? I know the resolution won't be the greatest but gives users a split screen view of both at the same time

That would be cool and allow easy access to AC functions. Alternatively, you can use the half-baked Alexa voice commands. What crappy implementation that is.

Thanks! Great questions. I made sure to choose a large, lower-rpm type fan that is completely silent. It cools both the switching circuitry and the Android computer, which are two separate PCBs. The Android computer & the fan turn off when the vehicle is locked, then turn back on when the vehicle is unlocked. The switch remains on all the time but draws an infinitesimal amount of power.
I like to keep my truck unlocked while parked in the garage. Does this mean the fan and the Android computer will never turn off?

That's correct!

EV Play contains a Wi-fi and Bluetooth module used just for AA/CP functionality (both are connected to your phone for wireless AA/CP sync).

EV Play also has secondary Wi-fi and Bluetooth module used for all other tasks, like playing Android video & audio apps, multiplayer gaming, etc. So theoretically yes, you could pair it to a Bluetooth headset and use an Android audio app simultaneously while you're using AA/CP.
You mentioned usb stuff. You think this would work?

I'm trying to imagine a constant 4g or higher connection.

Is it a pi? Maybe a 5g hat?

I think 12v turns off still when you leave right?

This sounds quite terrible, though I'm definitely prissy about UI/UX since that's part of my job. Maybe if it could be mounted on the screen itself, but still, sounds awful.

Why not use one of the add-on CarPlay units? The only difference with this is leveraging the huge screen, but I don't think that's super helpful for CP. The 9" screens are fine (I use one).
They should look into a canbus interface that hijacks an unused physical button, like a long press. This is how the Tesla HDMI one works. No janky buttons.

Yes, video-in-motion is disabled. And yes, the scenario you outlined is possible, though I'm not sure 100% legal (not that I care, just pointing it out).
I don't know about that. If I'm buying the hardware and I'm paying a subscription fee, why won't you let me do something insanely dangerous like binge watch Stranger Things while doing 85 in the right lane or streaming a reaction video to the latest Taylor Swift song???

Hey Alex,
Is the $99 deposit put toward the $399 overall cost or just a place in line?

I don't hate this idea, but if it adds more cost, I'm okay with just a random button lol.

Interesting how much more expensive that one is. (The one I found was over 500 and was only HDMI)

I almost would prefer just having an HDMI input option though, then I could make my own android pi or something else. Maybe even host a little llama 3.2 1B just because I can lol

Dont discount the fact he's using the touchscreen interface. That's huge.

You can do all 3:

-HDMI to USB adapter (certain ones, will sell them on the site eventually) will allow you to output most HDMI sources to the Rivian screen.

-You're getting an 8-core, 64bit Android computer, Pi away!

-It has an NPU capable of 6TOPS. Pretty capable for local LLMs.

All these aren't supported officially(yet), so "you break it, you buy it" as they say. But if you are a tinkerer at heart, then tinker away!

Long pressing anything is annoying AF for tasks that require frequent use. You won't be switching back and forth in rapid succession, but often enough where having to long press a button to do so each time is going to drive you nuts.

The "janky" button is fast, reliable, can be mounted anywhere, and doesn't require taking your eyes off the road to press.
