I’ve had my R1S for 2.5 weeks. I just charge this morning. When I went to open the charge door it didn’t fully open, I pushed the button again and it opened all the way. charged the car. Unplugged. Push the button to close the door and it only moved a couple degrees and then moved back. It’s stuck in this shallow range of motion. I’ve tried to gently assist it, but even if I can get it lined up, it won’t close in on the frame and I’m afraid to reply too much force. I’ve restarted the vehicle and walked away. I’m waiting for it to fully reset and hoping for the best.

I am having this exact issue this morning. What was your end result? I am currently scheduled for mobile service, but it’s 11 days out and driving around with the charging port door open doesn’t seem like a good idea. I am currently letting it sit in the sleep cycle to see what happens.

I'm a bit annoyed at this issue because when I picked up the car, I mentioned to the guy that I didn't like this mechanical door, it seems to "fit into the category of things that'll break". he told me he's never heard of one breaking. So much for that.

For me, I'm able to close mine by lining up the door, and gently applying pressure to it as I hold the access button. bit by bit it gets more and more closed until its fully sealed.

here's where I'm annoyed though. I was scheduled for mobile service almost 4 weeks out (3 now) and yesterday I noticed in the app that they are canceling that mobile appointment because they will "have to remove the front Facia and that can't be done via mobile." Then they tell me I need to call to schedule my new appointment, in other words, I'm in the same boat I was in a week and half ago but at the end of the line again. This is not the best Customer handling. I had called and after troubleshooting it with me they had set up a mobile appointment. they're canceling it and telling me to call and schedule. This car is less than a month old, I would think that if they're rediagnosing the fix, and that I need to bring it in for that, they'd call me to arrange this instead of just canceling it and saying contact us.

so, I delayed and delayed following up on this because A) with some effort, I could still open and close it. 2) I didn't want to take It in yet due to needing the vehicle. so, even though I was told that they'd cancel my mobile service and to call to make an appointment at the SC, the day came that my mobile appointment was scheduled for, and the technician came out to the house and fixed it. took him about 30 minutes and I'm all set. I showed him the conversation about it going to be canceled and he was baffled and didn't understand why I would've gotten that. a bit odd but alls well that ends well.

That's great news. What was the issue causing the problem? Did they have to swap out the motor?

Appreciate this. Same issue, just started today. So I'm just going to wiggle it open/closed until mobile can fix (now that I know it's mobile repairable).

For me, It would open if I repeatedly pressed the button, a little at a time. however, to close it, I needed to rotate it down into position (which offered zero resistance) then as I pressed and held the button and with a slight bit of pressure it would close a little bit each time. I would press and hold the button until it stopped moving, lift my finger and repeat. I got it to close on average with three cycles of this without feeling like I was breaking anything. just steady consistent pressure til it got its tight seal.

I hope that in next generations, they just opt for a more traditional gas cap cover that is released with a button, but manually hinged. from go, this seemed to fit into the category of "unnecessary things that will break"

Described it well, that's what it's taking for me, hoping it'll work for the next 2 weeks.

Port Cover calibration in RIDE didn't do jack, nor hard resets, ECU reloads.

However I doubt it's coincidental it happened right after the recent software update.

70k miles/2 Rivians this is the first time I've had this issue. Just grateful I can encourage it open for charging, and fidget it shut after.

I was also nervous it would get worse and maybe stop closing. But it was consistently broken the whole time. 😏. And when closed it was definitely sealed.
