Second gen was supposed to come out at the end of this year or next based on their original projections. I'm not convinced whoever the source is doesn't understand that.

Ford Motor executives are in active discussions about scrapping the electric version of its F-150 pickup, according to people familiar with the matter, which would make the money-losing truck America’s first major EV casualty.

The Lightning, once described by Ford as a modern Model T for its importance to the company, fell far short of expectations as American truck buyers skipped the electric version of the top-selling truck. Ford has racked up $13 billion in EV losses since 2023.

“The demand is just not there” for F-150 Lightning and other big electric pickups, said Adam Kraushaar, owner of Lester Glenn Auto Group in New Jersey. He sells Ford, GMC, Chevy and other brands. “We don’t order a lot of them because we don’t sell them.”

No final decision has yet been made, according to people familiar with the discussions, but such a move by Ford could be the beginning of the end for big EV trucks. Ram truck-maker Stellantis earlier this year called off plans to make an electric version of its full-size pickup.

General Motors executives have discussed discontinuing some electric trucks, according to people familiar with the matter. Sales of Tesla’s angular, stainless steel Cybertruck pickup tanked this year. And EV truck-maker Rivian has been cutting jobs to conserve cash.

Ford already paused production of the truck last month amid an aluminum shortage. The company is weighing whether to keep that plant idle as it shifts to smaller, more affordable EVs, the people say. The company said it would restart production “at the right time.”

In October, the first month since the end of the federal EV tax credit, Ford’s overall EV sales in the U.S. fell 24% from a year ago. Ford dealers sold 66,000 gas-powered F-Series pickups, up a tick from a year earlier, and just 1,500 Lightnings, the fewest of any model.
Shocker /s

America's large truck audience are not interested in electrification. And whatever market there is for one up north in Canada is effective dead because of ego-fueled tariffs. The folks who currently drive smaller cars in the US, including the Maverick, are more open to it. AND, Ford's been telling anyone who'd listen that their "game changing" new small EV and truck platform is just around the corner—i.e. "95% done". With current winds, they may just convert Lightning production to this new small electric truck and at conservatively low production capacity—then scale up if demand calls for it. In the end, all they care about is what is most profitable.

That said, at the most recent No Kings a bunch of us got flipped off by a couple in a Lightning. I saw it coming along and thought for sure "one of us", but nope, LOL.

Like, we are literally fighting for you to be able to have that vehicle, but 🤷

Hope they enjoyed us making hearts and "I love you's" back at them. 🤣

I was happy to see a few Rivians in my neck of the woods driving along the protest route that shared our message.

I am very glad you were friendly back at them since their behavior didn't deserve it, but I totally disagree that your protest is helping anyone.

I won't be one of them. For sure. I support free market capitalism.

My vote is 100% in my best interests and yours. You just don't understand the consequences of big government. I do, and that is how I vote. Just like that rude Lightning driver.

I love my Rivian, BTW, and I desperately want them to survive. I am even a stockholder. I am already thinking about how great the Gen3 R1 is going to be.

But they need to survive by building appealing products, not by taking my less affluent friend's earnings against his will. The free market should decide. Not some politician or unelected government bureaucrat.

Somwhat ironically, my business partner -- who has been talking about buying a Lightning since they were announced but turned down his pre-order allocation -- closed on a Lightning yesterday and picked it up today.

I love my R1T. If more people just gave
it a try they would discover how capable it is.

I agree. It is a sports car (almost) that can rock crawl. And my R1T is the most comfortable vehicle I have ever owned.

I can stack 30 sheets of drywall in the back. And better yet, I can refuel at home. And it will never need the spark plugs or timing belt changed.
