Official Ford announcement:
https://www.f150lightningforum.com/forum/threads/important-update-the-ford-ev-roadmap-and-future-of-f-150-lightning-erev-next-gen-model.33426/

“Ford is ending production of the fully-electric F-150 Lightning as part of a broader companywide shakeup of its electric vehicle plans, the company announced Monday. In its place, Ford will sell what’s known as an “extended range electric vehicle” version of the truck, which adds a gas generator that can recharge the battery pack to power the motors for over 700 miles.

The company did not share when the new F-150 Lightning will go on sale, or how much it will cost. Ford said it will report a charge of $19.5 billion in special items, most of which will be recorded in the fourth quarter, due to fact that this broader pivot will affect numerous vehicle and battery factories. “

I'll have to reach out to my friend that was working on T3 and see if he'll give me his opinion on this pivot..

“Rather than spending billions more on large EVs that now have no path to profitability, we are allocating that money into higher returning areas, more trucks and van hybrids, extended range electric vehicles, affordable EVs and entirely new opportunities like energy storage,” Ford president Andrew Frick said on a call with reporters.

Interesting how BMW can make both EV and ICE on the same assembly line, and make a profit on both. Meanwhile Ford sells most EVs at a loss.

Don't worry, our tax dollars will just bail them out because they are "too big to fail"
The thing I hate about this comment is how true it is. All we can hope for is companies like Rivian to make Ford irrelevant.

I sort of get the logic, as their path to profitability goes through their new EV platform, and has little to do with the existing Mach-E or Lightning.

But this new platform better be damn good, or Ford is toast in the long term.

EREV's are going to be a dead-end. That R&D money would be better spent elsewhere. The market for them is above 0, but they'll probably sell fewer than they sold Lightning's.

Even more important than government policy is the price of gas. There isn't much interest in EV's while the price of gas is low. EV's will fly off the lot if gas goes back over $5/gallon. No one knows when that will happen, but it will happen again.

Any manufacturer without legit good products on the shelf will be toast the next time that happens.

Does BMW actually make net profit on EV’s? Either way, the BMW customer base is willing to pay a premium price that the Ford customer base is not. Ford is probably making the right decision here. That’s why Porsche was killing it with the Taycan for a couple years - they have buyers that will pay for it.

SUV and Cars are fine with 350-400 mile range. working trucks you need the towing range. 700 miles with maybe 350 for towing that would be awesome. That’s why I’m hoping Rivian would increase its range on the R1T

The press release on the EREV says "Heavy-duty towing". I'm really really curious if they are going to make an F-250 or higher version of it, or if that was just meaningless artistic license.
