Yup, camera-only systems are the way to go…
Are you able to explain how LIDAR and RADAR would fix this, in a situation well known for fooling them? The glancing angle over the water means they'd get little return.

I’m not, however this doesn’t excuse the fact that this happened. I would say that if map data was utilized, this probably would not have happened. No?

I am certain you understand the point of having both is redundancy.

And changing the subject does not really explain why camera-only is better or how it likely contributed to the accident, does it?

Let's not send traffic to Electrek please. They shadow ban anyone who disagrees with their narrative, and for the last 3 years that narrative is: Elon bad. Tesla bad. China good.

No surprise the article shares no information on if the driver applied the brakes or FSD, maybe the user addresses this in the comments? It's also not clear if this is a perception issue or the widely reported navigation issues currently plaguing cutting edge versions of FSD, which this user has selected.

Thousands of miles are logged daily on FSD and this 7mph approach to a pond is worthy of an article? FSD must be doing better than I think.

According to the reports and video footage of the incident, the owner applied the brakes.

The vehicle's "Full Self-Driving" (FSD) system did not stop on its own. The owner, Daniel Milligan, stated that he had to intervene to prevent the car from entering the water. He later demonstrated that the error was repeatable, showing that the car would attempt to drive down the same boat ramp again if he did not manually brake.

Yes, Tesla wants you to believe that you can ride in the back seat and let the CyberTaxi's drive you, so of course it is relevant.

You are a little behind on your knowledge here ... Tesla videos now show if the car is in self-driving mode and other data.

The video (url) *shows* that the user applied the brakes! (blue self-driving turns off!) -- same in normal FSD driving where the blue steering wheel turns off (back to grey) when you brake.

Only when the vehicle detects that you are recording video of it from your phone.

Well to be honest, far more humans have driven into lakes, rivers, flooded areas, soon to be flooded areas…
