The Drive: Rivian Won’t Talk About the Missing R2 Tri-Motor. The Reason Why Is Big
Where’s the tri-motor model?

Rivian spokesperson Mikhael Farah told The Drive, “This is just the beginning for R2, so much more to come ;).” Farah could’ve just responded with the winky face and been done, but the confirmation that this is just the warm up act should leave enthusiasts on the edge of their seat. RAD is clearly coming.
Article connects Rivian Adventure Department with a future tri-motor option. Might be a ways off since Rivian hasn't said much, but it's interesting.

Sounds like the author is speculating just like the rest of us. But very good speculating at that. Didn't think of a rebrand for the R1 lineup but standard, performance and RAD makes a lot of sense (like BMW has regular, M-models and full on M cars).

I was personally excited for the R2 Tri. Shame that it is likely a ways out. It would be unique though if it does come out. This would be equivalent of a Model Y Plaid...bring it Rivian. Give it to us!

Focus is on profitability and the core product for Rivian.

Tri-motor is a niche product with low volume. If they had focused on that, the stock would sell off more than already have since the LE is $58K, when all along, the investor community was expecting $45k vehicle.

While RJ repeatedly said they are committed to the $45k; that said, now its not even spec'd and is out there in late 2027 at the earliest.

Committed to a 45k option is a fucking stretch of the English language if I ever saw one.
Neither the $45k nor $49k include the rear window. They said constantly the base product would be reasonably spaced and they can’t even include one of the key marketed features of the vehicle.

also remember— 20-30% profit margins on the R2 line according to financial calls going into this year. Couldn’t eat those numbers even a little for the window to make it.

so it’s basically a 54k vehicle at the least.

The R2 Tri will come, but not until they have that motor designed and build for R3X as it will be the same motor going in both. I don't see this being done until they are ready to build them in GA. I could see GA being nothing but Tri-motor builds off the line initially and then providing dual/single motor builds later.

The droppable rear window was never expected to be on the $45k model. Reasonable people know some things like that, ventilated seats, range etc will be sacrifices to hit a low price point.

I was thinking they’re gonna rebrand the R1 lineup too. Makes a lot of sense to keep distinct trims with specific accent colors related to performance/hierarchy rather than just number of motors.

I too want an R2 Tri, but I’m prob gonna settle for the Performance unless they launch the Tri by early 2027.

I firmly believe that Rivian shot themselves in doing Quad motor then a Tri motor. Then transitioning to inhouse R&D of them there was so much added cap expenditure on the hardware and software side.

Focus on optimization of a single motor to control an axle and then apply that to single (RWD) and dual (AWD + RWD conserve) and apply that implementation to the R1/R2/R3 lines. One has now reduced supply chain, streamlined production, and as a result gained service value.

Now they have a path forward to not bring in complexities of the tri/quad. A R3 and R3X (quad hot hatch) would be appealing. Market the R2/R3 to the masses with streamlined approach. Add dthe R3X as the niche. $0.02
