When I bought my '13 X5d used with under 27k miles on the clock in late '16, diesel was cheaper than premium in SoCal. Then the CA fuel tax kicked in a couple years later. When Russians invaded Ukraine, I remember paying more than $120 to fill up (22.5 gallon tank, but the cost was for about 16 gallons).Diesel in my area is over $5.00 a gallon - $1.40 a gallon more than regular.Even during COVID, the spread maxed out at around $1.00 as I recall.
When we bought my wife's X3 Diesel, the spread was about 50 cents so the diesel was cheaper to operate. Not any more!

What the actual F, Y2K was a real as a heart attack. My company spent millions on remediation. I was responsible for a host of applications. Worked my *ss off. Cool? I lived through the millennium bug scare when money was wasted to fix an issue that didn’t happen. Many cases of scares about new technology and each time (like the advent of the internet) prosperity has increased not decreased. Will AI be different- we will see but it’s a judgement informed by your own perspective to say this is the worse situation we have been in for 50+ years.
They could. But, what oil production has been destroyed? US imports only 4% from Saudi Arabia. None from Iran. Prices are up at the pump only because global market has been disrupted, substantively and emotionally. Cost of batteries and other components Rivian and its suppliers import are affected by shipping costs (and tariffs). For them to increase production, they have to place more orders and deal with lead time for those orders. It's not as simple as just saying "build more!"As much petroleum infrastructure is being destroyed, it's going to be a long time before prices normalize. At this point, I think Rivian should try to push as much production capacity into building the R2 as they possibly can. Shrink R1 production to a trickle if they need to. I hate this war. It's absolutely stupid, but Rivian should try to take as much advantage of these high fuel prices as possible.

Could go back to the no export rule that was in place from 1975 to 2015.

Just think of how screwed we’d be if that Keystone pipeline had been completed. The whole point of that was to bring Canadian oil down to Cushing, OK so they could put it on the world market. If that had been completed, it would have been sold as WTI ($99.31). But instead its still sold as Western Canadian Select (WCS) which is currently at $83.38. Maybe the administration would be better served to bury the hatchet with our Canadian brethren.
