Maybe a stupid question - I just got my Rivian plates, they are "EL" plates - electric vehicle plates (with the additional yearly fees).

Can you get "vanity" EL plates? are they just regular plates and still just pay the yearly fee per the registration type? how does this work in IL? Thanks!

I purchased my R1T back in September 22 so things have changed, but I do not believe you can get vanity 'EL' plates. However, I do believe you can get vanity 'regular' plates, for example I am hoping to soon register my Iraqi Freedom Campaign plates from my other truck onto the R1T. I have seen vanity U of I plates etc on Tesla's etc. Regardless, I am sure they are still going to hit you for the higher registration cost.

Yeah, that's kinda what I figured - the plate itself won't matter much, it's the registration they'll go off of, and it's an electric reg. so you'll be paying - which is fine - it's just unclear how vanity plates work with the EL registration

I was told buy someone if you switch plates you can get away from paying the extra electric charge not sure how true that is.

I have vanity plates on my R1S. They definitely charge the EV registration charge (since it's a function of the vehicle and not the plate). Other than that, it's the same vanity plate that was on my previous ICE vehicle.

Raising this back up - I'm getting an error about "can't switch plate types" when using the pick-a-plate website. For those who got vanity plates what did you select for the plate type? Thanks!

I didn't go through that process. Already had the vanity plates on the ICE vehicle the Rivian replaced. Had the plates transferred through the registration process.

hmm, wonder if I need to call/go in for this. Maybe the website is not setup to deal with EL to non-EL plates (and assign proper fees or whatever) That would suck

Hmm, that's odd. IL allows both vanity and personalized plates for EVs. I went to pick a plate, chose passenger vehicle, and entered some random text, then got to the screen where I enter last few of VIN to transfer. Since mine already has vanity plates there was no point in proceeding with the test so I called it quits. Hopefully you don't have to go into the DMV - never any fun!

@invernite It's PAST that very step where I am seeing the error. Maybe it's just something specific to my situation, but it's after entering the VIN, existing (EV) plate, etc. That it errors out
