2nd drive to Whistler more challenging than first:
Crown Hill to Whistler Friday 1/12/24
Even though I installed new software and set to precondition before departure this trip was a challenge. Arctic air spilled down through the Fraser Valley causing low temperatures from 27F in Seattle to -4F in Whistler. Also strong headwinds on I-5. Battery started at 51F.
R1S with OEM 20s. Showed 273 miles at 100%. Selected Conserve for trip and showed 303. These numbers assume efficiency of 2 m/kWh.
I set Nav to finish trip at 10% for emergency buffer. It predicted 6 miles left at destination when I left home. Lower efficiency confirmed after driving past Everett. I kept my speed to less than limit +5. Miles at destination slowly reduced and charging added to route by nav.
Electrify Canada in Squamish kept showing occupied so began looking for alternatives on Ca Hwy 1. There aren’t that many DC Ultra Fast (150+)! PlugShare shows several On The Run 150kW chargers located at gas stations. Beware! They have a battery buffer for fast charging but they throttle down quickly. We stopped at one in North Vancouver. Attendant activated charger for us (good) because Journie Rewards App would not install on iPhone because I am not a Canada resident (bad). Charging started at 16kW so as soon as we finished with restrooms we left to charge in Squamish.
We stopped at Dominoes in Squamish to pick up pizza. Electrify still showed 4/4 occupied. Found nearby charger at Greg Gardner Chevy. 2x 120kW stations with 2 CCS plugs each. See photos. 3 spaces blocked by dealer cars that weren’t charging. One was Ice Blazer. Luckily the station we could access provided max 120kW throughout 20 minute session. Switch app used. 36kWh added while Pizza consumed plus 5 minutes more was enough for me to get going again. Cost is $0.40/kWh, significantly less than Electrify without plan.
Finished trip with 25%.
216 miles, 1.67 miles per kWh, 130kW.
Would have been in turtle mode without charging.
I plan to charge overnight at Lot 4 Level 2 in preparation for home run.
Wishing for Tesla to add Magic Docks. Currently none showing in BC.
Why no RANs in this region Rivian???
