Hi crew, we will be moving up (to Vancouver) soon. We've been to Portland several times before and it looks like it's generally cleaned up since we were last here in 2021, but maybe not compared to pre-pandemic. How do y'all feel about having a more expensive vehicle in the city? I haven't noticed very many EVs or nicer vehicles in general. With electricity rates so low I'm a bit surprised.

I have lived in Portland back in the 70s and 80's. Its changed A LOT! As an R1S EV owner, I worry about leaving my vehicle on the streets. You see so many windows busted out or vandalized vehicles. We live within the state now, but I am in Portland 3 to 4 times a week, so it really depends on where you are parking the vehicle and how long you leave it.

There are quite a few Portland R1 owners and to me is almost seems like 1 in 10 cars is a Tesla these days here. It all depends on what parts of the city you plan to be parking in and where you are parking.

I have never felt a problem leaving my Model S, BMW i3, or Rivian parked anywhere in Portland for a few hours. I do make a point of making sure *NOTHING* is visible in the cabin through the windows, though. Overnight, it can depend on the neighborhood. I wouldn't leave a vehicle parked in one place for more than a couple days though. (It's also technically a code violation, but Portland Police aren't enforcing anything any more.). Portland is *VERY* EV-heavy. I'm not sure where you were that you didn't see EVs everywhere. We aren't Norway (yet) but are definitely one of the top markets for EVs in the US.

@CharonPDX I'm from Irvine CA(home of riv hq!) where maybe 30% of the cars are EVs, most of them being white Teslas lol

I live in Vancouver. I have had an R1T for 2 years. We are now getting an R1S on top of that. No worried at all!!! I live in Minnehaha area too (I am not Ridgefield or Camas)

Basically totally fine, I passed 4 other rivians today in this area.

Thanks for the comments! I'll be in Felida and expect to grab food and do random things all around in Portland often. I'll definitely be at the climbing gym by the 405/30 freeways several times a week. That got way cleaned up from years past so I feel somewhat better.

Vancouver seems okay from the few areas I drove through except tent city a few blocks from the new waterfront.

I'm pretty good about not storing things in my car, but my windows are also heavily tinted, including fronts. Maybe I'm paranoid but I almost wonder if ppl would break a window to see if anything's inside. Do cops care about tint?

Portland cops don't. Can't speak to Vancouver.

It seems that mostly in Oregon, if they stop you for something else, it may come up. Or if you are driving erratic and they want a reason to stop you, the tint may be a good reason.

As for your concern, honestly, I wouldn't worry about it unless you're parking overnight or for a long term at night. Now, if a riot, I mean, protest breaks out near where you parked, all bets are off.... :)

I live in SUPER DANGEROUS NORTH PORTLAND and don't think twice about leaving my T in the driveway or even on the street as needed. I also tend to leave the thing unlocked now and then and haven't had a problem.
Don't be dumb - aka don't leave expensive things in view - but otherwise, don't buy the media narrative.
I also work in the 'Couv and definitely see fewer EVs and Rivians up there. There is an S around the corner from my work though.

I will say that there are places to be extra careful; we had a much crappier car broken into while on a hike in Forest Park.

Stay in the nicer areas and you're fine, but Portland has changed a lot for the worse. I would still be cautious, aware and mindful of where you park. Luckily I haven't had any issues, but I purposely am strategic about where I park when in the city. If parking in a garage in the city, I try to park in view of a security camera for what it's worth. Portland has gone down hill and is pretty trash in a lot of places, just like the cities in the neighboring peoples republic of CA and WA. It's a darn shame, but a result of the obvious reasons.

I came here from Detroit. I’m still looking for the bad part of Portland.. what the heck are you people talking about?

@SherlockOhms , that's exactly why. You came from Detroit, among the worst of the worst. Detroit makes "other questionable places in the NW" look "good."

Lived here nearly all my life. Even in the early '80s, the "bad" parts of Portland still weren't anywhere near as bad as "medium" parts of Detroit, Los Angeles, etc. And those areas tend to be fully gentrified now, with the current "bad" areas not even worthy of the term "sketchy" much less anything worse.

Really, just about any metropolis city has areas where you would prefer not to park. It's all relative to location and time. There are places out in my rural neck of the woods I wouldn't leave my truck either....

Heck, I've seen more breakins in "*GOOD*" parts of town. Because criminals go there to break into the nicer vehicles. I lived in a "bad" part of town growing up, we never had our house broken in to, never had any car broken in to, only ever had one thing stolen from our yard. Then lived in a "firmly middle class" neighborhood for 20 years, never had any crime at our house - my wife would leave her purse in the car accidentally overnight in the driveway, car unlocked, and it would be there in the morning. Moved to a "nice" neighborhood four years ago, and had to put up security cameras, because we had multiple things taken from the yard in the first couple months. (Our boat was parked in our driveway, and someone stole the gas tank out of it - a brand new gas tank that had never been filled with gas!)
