Hi folks,
Looking for recommendations regarding installation of outlet +/- charger for a soon to be R1S owner in the peninsula.

1. Any downside to just getting an outlet?
2. What home charger would be recommended? We don’t have other EVs. Any benefit to getting a Tesla Universal Charger or a Rivian Charger? Any other charger that you folks have found more reliable than the two above? Given that the car is kinda expensive, would not want to penny pinch on charging!
3. Any recommendations for electricians servicing the peninsula who deal with this professionally?

Hi, YMMV but this is what I worked with when I decided for myself.

1. Yes, the outlet cannot output as much as L2 charger hardwired into your panel. This also depends on the breaker it's connected to. 48 amps is the most L2 home chargers can do, and they need to be connected to a 60 amp breaker.

2. That depends on your needs and what's available in your area. I still have a Tesla from before and I had Tesla gen 2 wall charger up. I just bought an adapter from Amazon to use that Tesla charger with the Rivian and it's worked great. There is a newer Tesla L2 charger called Universal Charger that has both NACS and a J1772 plug so you won't need a third party adapter. Anecdotally, I've read online that people mention problems with the Rivian branded home charger.

3. It's been a while, but we used Pacific Coast Electrician. I don't think they are around anymore. Willow Glen Electric is another one that was recommended to us. Make sure they are licensed and will pull the permit(s) for you. Check with your utility company to see if there are rebates for buying/installing an EVSE.

1. Just adding an outlet does not make sense. You already will be spending money to get that. Just pay a bit more a get a proper install with 60A breaker. With just an outlet you probably will get ~2 miles per hour. With a charger+60A breaker outlet install you are looking at charging ~10x faster (approx 20 miles per hour).
2. Just get whatever your budget allows. It's really not that critical. You can go with aesthetics here or value. Your call. As long as it supports 60A charging.
