Rivian Owners Germany

We have been waiting for a long time to be able to buy Rivian Automobiles in Germany. We want to share the experiences with Rivian and the German TÜV and the German registration.

Hi everyone,
great to be part of this group and thanks for having me.

My family and I are currently living in the US, but we are planning to move back to Germany (Konstanz area) in 2026. Since I’m a big fan of Rivian, I’m considering bringing either an R1S or – if the timing works out – a Rivian R2 with me as part of our household goods.

I noticed that some of you have already imported a Rivian into Germany or are currently driving one there, so I wanted to reach out and ask for your real-world experience:
  • What should I expect when bringing an R1S/R2 to Germany in my situation?
  • Any specific challenges with TÜV, individual approval, lighting changes, charging port, software, or connectivity?
  • How are service, repair, spare parts, and OTA updates working for you in Germany?
  • Would you recommend waiting for the R2’s official European introduction, or is an R1S import in 2026 a more realistic option?
  • And finally: anything you would do differently if you had to go through the process again?
Any advice, tips, or lessons learned would be greatly appreciated — especially anything that helps me prepare early.

Just brought my R1T to Austria - going through registration soon. Just converted my rear blinkers to amber turn signals with another forum member who sells a conversion kit. Plug and Play - super easy. 60min to install. Germany is relatively easy - contact www.auto-mandt.com - they have done multiple Rivians through TÜV. I would do the turn signals first via https://ecar.dk/
As for shipping make sure the high voltage battery jumper and the 12V ground get disconnected once placed into the container.
In Germany you will need some sort of a 4G or 5G hotspot to enable online connectivity for the car. Aout to install a permanent Unifi UMR Ultra for 4G LTE connectivity in mine.
You will also need a charge adapter CCS2 to CCS1 I got this one a while back: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DMFRW5T8 - works great and have hit 217kW on IONITY chargers all the time.
I would also recommend getting a set of winter tires before you ship. Hope this helps!
