So it turns out alternative routes are offered when going to a destination. I still don't see options offered during the drive, but this is an improvement over what I originally thought the reality was. Not sure if this was added in the 2020.24.40 update or if it's always been there.

I'll have to try this, too. I haven't done any long trips in my R2 yet, but going to/from downtown Chicago with Google Maps on the phone always features multiple options that vary based on time of day and traffic.
