Oh that’s cool. What was the benefit? Get it earlier? Any discount? Was registration tricky?

I got a factory tour and was able to get it a few weeks earlier because they did not need to ship it. No financial benefit.

Did you still have to pay the roughly $1500 shipping fee?
yes, destination charge is a shared charge across the line. You still paid it for the R1 on a factory delivery.

I might be wrong actually since I double checked and I couldn't find that it's required to be equalized. It's required to be disclosed on the Monroney sticker.

Looks like the whole industry adopted equalized pricing so that some dealers don't have advantage over another by distance.

EV companies probably keep it to maintain parity with the existing car sales system as it's essentially an easy somewhat below the line fee. Like Rivian advertising a $45k car, but it's really another $1500 extra in destination fee that they don't have to advertise right along with every other car company.
