Interesting new technology for electric motors is emerging. A Bengaluru startup called Vimag Labs just secured its fifth Indian patent for an electric motor that runs without any rare-earth magnets, using software and power electronics to generate its magnetic field instead.

doubtful this leads to a step change in the industry. The article seems to overlook the fact that EVs free of permanent magnet motors have been in production for years. Tesla has been using induction motors since the original Model S. BMW and Nissan and perhaps others have also made use of their own EESM motors and ZF came out with their i2sm induction motor that I don't think ever made it into a vehicle. so far, the trade-offs still lean in favor of permanent magnet motors. time will tell if the Vimag claims pan out.
