Oh good, they finally found a space. The Rivian Marketing Director told me they were looking for a DC location (not the Tyson's one). I kept checking every now and then to see if they found a spot. That is a very pricey area.

It'd be nice if there was a service center somewhere between Gaithersburg and Sterling...

4,000 plus sq ft of retail, and other than "gear" or a vehicle, there isn't much reason to go there.

In this case, we can't complain too much. Rivian has about 100 services centers, going to 150 by the end of 2026. The fact there are 3 service centers around DC that's within an hour, is a lot compared to other areas that has none for 2 or 3 hours. And I'm someone who complains that Rivian never holds events or visits this area.

The space is to get foot traffic and spread brand awareness. Too many people in the DC area still don't know what Rivian is. The DMV is a pretty rich area of the country, and EV adoption is growing. From the Rivian Marketing lady I was speaking to last year, she said Rivian has made the area a priority around May of 2025 (no surprise there considering what was happening in the DMV at that time government wise). I'm also noticing a large uptick in EVs in my parent's neighborhood that a year ago didn't have many EVs. Now it seems every other house has at least 1. Rivian doesn't really market like traditional OEMs, and I do think they still rely mostly from word of mouth and visibility. Tyson's Corner I think has done a good job in attracting people. It's a high end mall and gets a lot of foot traffic, but this being visible from the street where people can see walking or driving, may be positioned better to get people to ask, "who is Rivian". Just getting the name out is a huge win.

This, I'm working with Rivian to change a lot of things, in theory big things coming from a event perspective this year

When I was young, I used to go into DC 3-4 times a week to go to the big warehouse clubs.

Now that I'm old, I can't think of any better reason to drive into the city than this.

Or maybe the zoo. Or the museums.

But mostly this. 😉

Honestly I hate the way spaces are located, its not car centric locations but I guess its about foot traffic. For me it would make more sense somewhere like Tysons but a stand alone location not inside a mall but real estate around here is a thing too.

I would love that, but seriously the DMV is so expensive, I'm not sure Rivian could justify the cost. I can't even buy a townhouse as a single lady in this area with a good job while my condo could buy a house or two in other places. If their priority is to spread brand aware in the DMV with high foot traffic, it would have to be DC which limits where in DC they could have their space. I mean I checked the apartments next to where the space will be. It's $2,700 for 480 sqft for their cheapest room.

Also, apparently the place they chose used to be a Greyhound hub, which is likely why the chose it. I've noticed their flagship spaces always has ties to transportation, so I checked the background of the building.

Pleeeease keep me posted. I went to the hike for the Rivian Grand Opening for Tyson's and loved it. It was a lot of fun and really wanted to do more Rivian events.
