    Snow Driving Issues

I've also had issues in the snow. I now run 20" Hakka LT3s (which are real winter tires) and they've been better, but one can still lose traction. They're not miracle workers. I would be especially wary of ice, and regen, and downward slopes. Remember, Rivians are much heavier than other SUVs...

    Neat new Google Maps features

https://blog.google/products/maps/google-maps-october-2023-update/ It's going to be hard for Rivian's built-in nav. to compete with AI-driven advances like these. Thanks to EV Sportline, I have CarPlay, so I'll get them for free, but most will not be so lucky.

Anyone else waiting on the March/April updates before placing an order/confirming config?

For me, it's about being able to put my phone down and have it charge without looking at it, by feeling for the magnetic attachment. If they can do that, I'll be happy. My case is also too thick to charge via a non-Apple charger, but that might just be flaws in cheap non-Apple chargers I've tried.

Anyone else waiting on the March/April updates before placing an order/confirming config?

Even if they improve the pad, it won't be good as MagSafe aftermarket options (if you own an iPhone, at least).

    Minor damage repair estimate: $49,880!

Tesla and Rivian seem to be turning parts into a profit center, by gouging insurance companies. Eventually the owners end up paying in the form of increased premiums.

Trouble in the snow with my QM R1T Adventure

Oh, shoot, that may be it. Is there truly no way to tell when regen is limited anymore? I was at least expecting a color change in the regen arc. Dang! Thanks for clueing me in. I’ll have to disable for the next test.

Trouble in the snow with my QM R1T Adventure

One thing I do like about the dual--it doesn't seem to limit regen in the cold like the quad did. Thus, I can recoup more energy driving back down a mountain when the R1 is cold.

Trouble in the snow with my QM R1T Adventure

I don't have much to add here except that I'm not a fan of the quad in the snow, mainly because regen is a piss poor substitute for anti-lock brakes, or real traction control. Rivian really screwed up there. I have lost lateral stability in the quad once (with winter tires), but I haven't seen...

Switched from Launch Edition Quad to Dual Motor Max Pack Performance -- my impressions / review

So far it's looking like the dual max pack will add only about 30 real world miles of winter "road trip" range over the quad. Does calling that a "max pack" tarnish the brand? Yes. Is it still pretty useful for me to have those 30 extra miles? Also yes.

Updates on R2 reveal event on Mar 7? - Laguna Beach seems to have approved the beach / ocean front event after all

I wouldn't hold stock through the reveal event, lest they try to capitalize on the good press by announcing a stock sale (or convertible bond sale) to fund the new factory.

New Battery Pack coming soon says Rivian... combination High Nickel and LFP cells 🔋

My read remains the same: they're still limited by supply of the good chemistries and it's hurting their ability to make more cars. Thus, no real max pack. Now they want to ramp production but they still can't get batteries, because they screwed up their long term supply deals (or, rather, were...

    Is Rivian getting desperate?

Even if demand falters, Rivian will not fail. There is plenty of capital out there to bail out an EV car company. Rivian's cost cutting measures are all about preventing stock dilution and maintaining executive compensation, not preventing failure. Look at Lucid and Fisker--still alive! At...

    Is Rivian getting desperate?

My personal experience is that the store cars are not defect free, though better than the first 1000 VINs. I wonder if they're cars which were rejected at delivery time.

Rivian leasing terms have been revised for R1T and R1S. Payment shown starts at $655 for R1T and $766 for R1S.

The Taycan is an incredible piece of engineering. Night and day compared to Rivian. Unfortunately the Taycan starts at $100K and goes up swiftly from there. I am not happy about entering a lease exactly one week ago only to have the payment drop by $300 a month. I am happy to be leasing rather...

R1S lease payments dropped... after I started my lease

Argh, I was bitten by this too. Oh well. It's still better to be taken to the cleaners on the lease than to own the car and take an even greater bath on resale value in three years.

Switched from Launch Edition Quad to Dual Motor Max Pack Performance -- my impressions / review

Does this bother you? The black on the left side is because the front wheels are not quite straight. The reversal of the parking line is due to some weird interpolation Rivian does to hide the fact that their cameras have a blind spot around the bumper. The black horizontal bar, though, is...

    Why don't R1s have a heat pump?

That article contains this pretty strong quote: “Any electric vehicle that comes out right now and doesn’t have a heat pump is a dinosaur already,” says John Kelly, an automotive technology professor and instructor focusing on hybrid and electric vehicle technology at Weber State University."...
