I've seen this once in >6000 miles. We just finished a 2000 mile trip from the SF bay area to Bellingham WA and I never saw it. It was a shock when it appeared but it only happened once and the car seems fine.

Looks like it is all metal except for the plastic end pieces that slide into the guides on the sides of the bed. Since it is dark I needed gloves to handle the panels since they were sitting in the sun and got pretty hot. Score +1 for the automated tonneau cover.
