The "practical space" issue is the big one that makes me most interested in an R2 over a Model Y, particularly for rear seat occupants. We currently have a Model 3, and as the kids are getting bigger and we've added a dog, I would have thought moving to a Y would make trips roomier. Except the...
I have a Thule Arcos box attached to a Stealth Hitch for road trips in my Model 3 (saves the range hit from a roof box, and efficiency is actually better with the Arcos!), and we have to park across multiple stalls, or at a right angle at the end of the line because of the V3 cables being short...
You found the reason! In some cases, the current does go through the motor in order to boost the incoming voltage to match the pack voltage. Certainly used widely in AC charging, and some vehicles even do this when DC charging 800V architecture packs at 4-500V DC stations (Lucid for example).
During today's R2/R3/R3X reveal event, at around 10:56, RJ discussed the Rivian Adventure Network:
Just afterwards, on the map presented on screen behind him, there appear to be a large number of as-yet unannounced/not previously proposed RAN sites beyond what's currently shown on the Rivian...
I am also “not allowed“ by the Chief Financial Officer…they also sold out of R1Ss before I learned about it.
I wonder if the little differences like daytime running lights would put a wrench in any plan to import them as a “new” vehicle?
I searched but also didn't see anything about Canadian availability. I'd pessimistically suspect (but definitely don't know for sure) that they won't send across the border (for any number of reasons), and that our local demo models are too new to put on the block yet. At these prices though...
Sure - if I could have it all, I'd of course also want to have video! But if I'm playing a game of "spend Rivian's limited human resource hours" I would prioritize USB audio support, more streaming audio options, and a web browser (which would allow for streaming video and even CarPlay though...
I don't have a Rivian (yet!) but given that the vehicles already offer hotspot functionality, I'd be less inclined to want the team to expend effort on video streaming on the main screen. In fact, a hotspot option may be even more advantageous given everyone already has their own tablets/phones.
There are a number of Rivian jobs posted on Linked In for the Calgary service center. Not sure what this means for timing for opening the site, but hopefully it’s down to weeks or months at this point.
