A friend of mine told me that driving an EV is more like flying an airplane than driving a car. You have to think ahead and plan. That is an exercise that I enjoy. If you have chargers in your location that you can turn to and the price is right go for it. If you do go for it I hope you enjoy it...
6AWG in conduit properly installed Is ok for 48A on a 60 breaker. 6 AWG Romex is not and is derated due to heat considerations. I had wanted to run 4AWG and put this all to bed and future proof, but the connector block in the Rivian charger is specked for 6 AWG although I am told the 4 will...
-Thank you,
Can you comment...
are the wires you tapped into always live? or do they go on with the vehicle,
do they go directly to the 12V only? and do you know which fuse goes to them ?
TIA
I like your plan, did not think about needing a fuse. If you make it happen please post it. I was just thinking about travelling with the extra battery and jumpers on a long trip. I just dont want to dismantle mine to figure it out.
I did go to the SC, Asked to buy a battery- they said NO. Would love to keep a backup in the frunk. I keep tools to get in the frunk in the trailer hitch. If anyone here can show off a battery with the dimensions for an adaptor plate that is what I would do. Don't want to spend $400 on an Ohmmu.
So many variables.... I have a 23 large pack quad vin 23xxx delivered 11/23, 21 OEM pirellis, 3 cargo bars.
Just shy of 10K miles now. Mainly a daily driver two and from work and a few road trips. no off roading.
In my ownership my average miles/kw has been 2.4. Sometime 1.8 in the cold to...
I bought the Rivian charger with my vehicle in 2023. I have had no issues with it . I do like the fact that is coordinates with the app, but its really not necessary.
I do recommend hard wired if possible. Plugs can fail and hard wired seems safer to me and can allow more amperage. I can max at...
Very nice setup and post. I don't camp so vapire drain is less of a concern for me, but I do live in fear of a 12V failure. I would consider using your type of set up as built in jumper cables for a backup 12v kept in the frunk if mine failed on a trip.
Thanks for such a nice post.
So many great suggestions here. I certainly agree with future proofing with the biggest subpanel you can have in the garage possible.
I wish I had room for a wall mounted presure washing station dedicated for vehicle. Would need power and a water supply.
Unfortunately some electricians don't seem to follow the code and use romex where a 48 A cahrge could be us . I had to educaate my electrician and we went with 6AWG in flex metal conduit which does not have to be derated. Frankly 4AWG would put all this to bed, but the Rivian charging block...
There has always been a lot of controversy on this in the forums. While op will know to charge at a lower amperage nec is worried about the next tenant who may not be so smart.
A lot of good information here so I would only add some future proofing comments.
In this era of ever evolving batteries and EV's, and while you are already running cable, I would run something large enough so that you can have a true sub panel in your garage area. You would then be able to...
My responses in red :
Okay I am probably not the right person to answer these questions but I'll give my opinion FWIW.
1. Yes no splicing - the OBD adapter connects to the SAE connector of the tender. Plug the tender in, then plug in the OBD and go (it should be on 12V and AGM). Seems...
Got home and had a bit of time to digest your post. Thank you showing the products and explaining.
Please comment if I am wrong:
It looks from the online pictures that the tender you use and the obd adaptor have the same plug so no splicing. Just plug to a wall outlet to charger and charger...
