  1. L2 charger down to 2.7kwh at 24F.. Should I be worried?

@COMtnEV This is great data! Do you think this supports the theory that once a session has been throttled, the truck cannot recover from it? To state it another way: the session will be throttled unless the pack has reached appr 55F prior to 80%. Re: the discrepancy between the temp shown on...
  2. L2 charger down to 2.7kwh at 24F.. Should I be worried?

@mkhuffman just like @OYLman, I have a Gen 2 Large pack and have had L2 throttling since I picked it up at the end of November. I don’t do a ton of long trips in the winter so pre-conditioning is a good enough work around for me, but I understand it’s still a hassle for some. From what I’ve...
  3. L2 charger down to 2.7kwh at 24F.. Should I be worried?

Agreed, we haven’t pinned down an exact temp, but the threshold seems to be somewhere between 50 and 55F. My main point in the last theory is that it doesn’t seem to be able to recover from a throttled session even if the pack warms above 50F.
  4. L2 charger down to 2.7kwh at 24F.. Should I be worried?

New theory: At <50F the Gen 2 R1 will stairstep throttle its charge rate at >80% SoC. The latest OTA (2024.51.31) successfully attempts to warm the pack >50F while L2 charging. Once the truck enters a throttled session it cannot recover from it even if the pack warms to >50F during the...
  5. Rivian, give me a SoC gauge option

I like the phone analogy and maybe the tiny battery ā€œpillā€ with a percentage meets the need on the driver display good enough. As for the instantaneous usage, I think the drive mode menu (attached screenshot for reference) would be the perfect place. The only part of the vehicle diagram that...
  6. Rivian, give me a SoC gauge option

I was picturing more of a continuous gauge with tick marks every 10% so you could discern approximately where you stood on SoC. More of an analog clock rather than a digital stopwatch with seconds.
  7. Rivian, give me a SoC gauge option

Well in nearly 50 years, I’ve learned that discovering the problem youā€˜ve been fretting over isn’t actually a problem is the best solution. My premise is having precise-looking, pseudo data is actually more of a problem than just having less information. Even the percentage SoC is not all that...
  8. Rivian, give me a SoC gauge option

This obviously isn’t for everyone and that’s fine. I think I addressed the ā€œbut I had 1 bar leftā€œ concerns with the switch to single percentage below 10%.
  9. Rivian, give me a SoC gauge option

A less granular gauge may not be useful to you, but in any situation where I’m not using the route planner, all I ever need/want is a general sense of SoC. Case in point, my kids are EV natives. The Nissan Leaf they drove through high school had a stacked bar gauge for SoC and that is all they...
  10. Rivian, give me a SoC gauge option

Good points. You may have driven past me on your way to UT, I’m jealous! Agree, the route planner (center display) is a far better estimate and I wish some of the variables were factored into the MTE Number in the drivers display. Mainly, just incorporate efficiency from recent past drives...
  11. Rivian, give me a SoC gauge option

Have you looked in the ā€œRiDEā€ menu (secret service mode)? You may get some indication there.
  12. Rivian, give me a SoC gauge option

My understanding is Rivian uses their mode-dependent range estimate divided by battery capacity multiplied by current SoC to estimate MTE. There is no factoring in for pack temp or past driving behavior etc. I think Tesla used to do that too, but have since improved their model to account for...
  13. L2 charger down to 2.7kwh at 24F.. Should I be worried?

We thought the threshold for throttling L2 charging (above around 75%) was 50F, but with the latest data from @COMtnEV it may be closer to 55F. I have L2 charged to 100% at full speed at 60F and I know we’ve had reports of achieving the same between 50 and 60F. My concern now is that if...
  14. L2 charger down to 2.7kwh at 24F.. Should I be worried?

Theory busted, ughh! If you continue on past 88% to 100% on this charge, please update us again afterwards. Are you still seeing the final plunge down to 1-2 Kw at >92% SoC? As the eternal optimist, I do think they are on the right track and glad to see the battery warming more. What kind of...
  15. Rivian, give me a SoC gauge option

To each his own, but to me the worse experience is watching a new EV driverā€˜s eyes widen in terror when they see the guess-o-meter drop off a cliff the first time they go up a hill. If I’m in the car, I can tell them to ignore it because it really doesn’t matter, but there are many who just give...
  16. Rivian, give me a SoC gauge option

Amen! Under normal use, I L2 charge one time a week to 70% and I haven’t spent more than 20 mins at a DCFC in years…Although I’m usually blazing in at 2-5% SoC and leaving at 50…splash and dash!!!
  17. Rivian, give me a SoC gauge option

Agree 100%. It takes a little while to get the gestalt of an EV. It’s like seeing through the Matrix, once you can do it, it’s very natural and the fear subsides.
  18. Rivian, give me a SoC gauge option

Iā€˜m not saying make the gauge the only option, just make it an option. Yes, most driving is without route planning, and most daily driving you don’t need to be concerned with range at all.
  19. Rivian, give me a SoC gauge option

Been thinking about range anxiety recently. Detractors use it as a cudgel and it’s become engrained in many people as a reason not to try an EV. I don’t deny it’s a real thing for folks getting into EVs, but why? My hypothesis is: range anxiety results mainly from the way EVs show fuel level...
  20. MKBHD Gen2 R1S Review

@portdirect You are right. I guess after 9 EVs, 7 years, and about 150K combined miles, I don’t even consider the EPA range, but it is important for some folks that are still learning this stuff And as a point of comparison. It’d probably be better if they just made broader categories, i.e. this...
