My totally wild out there speculation that hasn't been suggested yet: Apple is going back in on a car but on an R1/R2 platform (this was the original Ford plan, and Toyota's plan with Tesla - buy skateboards from a dedicated EV manufacturer).
The way the manufacturing lines were designed...
They've been great (I've got a little less than 10k on them). Recently had a buddy who's on his 3rd Tacoma for a ride, and he commented on how "not truck-like" the ride is.
I credit firmer sidewalls (of an LT-rated tire) and increased pressure (I bumped up to ~65psi) with, as I think I stated...
I am a former manufacturing engineer in the automotive industry. I have, quite literally, done this before.
None of the challenges you identify are new to the industry. And unlike those guys in Fremont, the vast majority of folks Rivian has hired come from inside the industry - all the way down...
I believe it was also putting very high loads back into the powertrain components unless you had a sufficiently low friction surface to attempt it on, as others have pointed out.
It's a cool marketing gimmick, though, like having bulletproof glass or the potential for the car to drive itself.
I talked about this on a previous tire thread (I'm running the Dueler A/T Revo 3's also at 65 psi), but my suspicion/working model is that the higher pressure and stiffer sidewall makes the fancy-trick suspension work a little better in single wheel bump and rebound. The softest/most compliant...
They almost certainly do. They're not paying the retail rate for these rentals.
Also, warranty accounting/economics are funny. Some of this is paid for out of the reserve for warranty that they hold on the books (e.g., as a percent of MSRP on the vehicle they hold x% to reimburse for warranty...
First, on the strike: Fain is not very smart, and it's going to bite him in the derriere before too long. Unifor/CAW has already struck a deal and I expect the UAW's deal will end up looking a lot like that (it included ~15% hike and a return of COLA but little else that has been demanded)...
I have had the Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revo 3's on since (almost) new. I immediately noticed the truck was much more manageable over bumpy roads and there was little change in highway noise.
I think they're slightly less efficient on long trips than the stock tires as my RivianFi data has shown...
LEs are still in production as there are still unbuilt LE pre-orders and I bet there are part minimums for badging, etc. Since that's the major difference (in addition to ability to get Launch Green colorway) they'll keep trickling in to the shop.
Why do they still make Launch Green? Same...
Sorry to resurrect an old thread.
1: that dent looks like it might be too big for a PDR attempt to be worth your while.
2: I used Paul Snipes, @dentsnipernashville, for a door ding on my R1T. He did awesome work, in my driveway and under an hour. Competitive on rates, too. He came highly...
I wouldn't read in to the ATL connection - PCNA is headquartered next to the Atlanta airport, and I'd be surprised if a US exec leader like that wasn't on a local board of some sort.
Since before the IPO, Rivian and RJ have done a fantastic job of bringing in experienced industry leaders to...
You guys all know they publish a quarterly SEC filing along with all of this right? For those of us who love facts, this is usually a pretty reliable source, as it's audited according to FASB and IFRS :).
This stuff is even searchable on the internet! Inline XBRL Viewer (sec.gov)
I expect R2S to look like a 5-seater version of R1S. Shrink the overall proportions accordingly and just make little brother.
R2R? That's gonna be a fun one. I want to see them make something like the Local Motors Rallyfighter from years back. Part trophy truck, part sports car.
I took NFPA 70E training many years ago, and this thread has served to remind me not to mess with sparky things.
Also, Taycans with the optional 19.2 kW onboard charger are cool. Mmm, 100 amp breakers.
Early times (maybe ~250 miles in), but I've had good results so far from my (homer pick) Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revo 3s in stock size. Just bumped the pressure up to see how range/efficiency will be impacted as I think I ran them a little low relative to folks here (I was ~50 PSI, just brought...
I have not done any "long-distance" range testing as most of my day-to-day driving is around town in Nashville, TN. To that end I've not seen anything glaringly bad about range estimation from the truck (e.g., I travel 10 miles and lose 12 miles of range), but the efficiency meter on the display...
