For me:
300 miles of range < 400 miles of range < 300 miles of range + 500KW charging + chargers every 10 miles on the freeway
And we need smaller, lighter, and more aerodynamic cars (he says, owning an R1S)
So more detailed version is:
We Rivian buyers think that a Mach-e buyer paying net $345 more to buy the frunk liner and have it installed is just crazy. OK well of course it is.
Then again, we Rivian buyers are apparently OK with paying $3,000 for black paint, $755 for an R1S cheapo donut...
The Waymo vehicles do a darn good job of driving themselves in most California weather conditions. Let's see, in the new Gen 6 cars that's:
13 cameras, four lidar sensors including the big 360 lidar on top, six radar sensors, and a bunch of microphones as well. And that's the brand new cars...
I have camped twice in the Rivian, in California, with no issues at all, save for lots of questions in the morning about what a "Rivian" is from a number of other campers.
More like "After briefly spiking to over 100%, tarrifs imposed by the US on China have temporarily settled at 30%, the highest level since the 90s."
Graph of China tarrifs over time:
And the 30% is just a temporary reduction right now. The suddently and arbitrarily raised tarrifs are now...
I towed a rented U-Haul 6x12-foot open top "utility trailer" with an R1S to pick up a bunch of 12 foot long construction stuff, copper and wood. I am very new to towing a trailer, but found it to be a piece of cake with the Rivian - handling was not an issue, weight certainly wasn't either, and...
For my recent road trips up and down California:
* Electrify America had the best prices, but were very often full, with cars waiting in line to charge.
* Tesla had the next best prices, with few lines, but I don't want to support Tesla if at all possible.
* RAN was fast and reliable and had...
The R5 Turbo 3E is going to be a GLORIOUS car, and I'd buy one instantly if I was in Europe and could get an allocation. The Rivian R3X - which in my head is wrapped with Martini livery like an 80s Lancia rally car by the way - is certainly more than a little similar to the Renault, but not as...
The Porsche Taycan "cross tourismo" (wagon) has a super custom bike rack with dual-point mounting. It's fantastically stable, but oh so expensive at $2,500 to $3,000.
I don't think it makes sense for the R2, a mid-range vehicle, to have accesories that are so prorietary, so I think that removing...
I have always heard that an average police car drives <120 miles per day, so an EV is perfect. And these cars have a ton of computers that need electricity, so also perfect.
I love the style, efficiency, and generally coolness of the Aptera, and I have a reservation for one - the 250 mile range grocery-getter version, not the long range one.
I am, however, worried that it ended up being way too wide and a bit too long. I may end up waiting for something quite a bit...
I'll add this: Think about car charging (EVSEs) versus powering your home with your car (future V2H) when wiring the garage. For now, you'll want to make sure that your cars can charge off of your solar but DO NOT charge off of your batteries. In the future, you'll want the car to be able to...
On the topic of 12V batteries, I received this voicemail today:
Transcript: "Hello Jeff. Hi Jeff. My name is <redacted>. I'm calling from Rivian
Service support. I'm calling you tonight because we identified your R1S as
a vehicle that needs a service appointment related to its 12 volt battery...
I lease an ID.4 base model super cheap to use as a "grocery getter" until the smaller R2 comes out.
In my view, the ID.4 is an awful car at the $40K+ starting price, but a very satisfying car at those cheap cheap lease rates. The software in particular is terrible - though support for CarPlay...
My R1S is on 22 sport bright wheels with Pirelli Scorpion Zero all-season tires. And I drive in Sport mode, with its lower ride height. The Rivian suspension is very good for an SUV - not floaty and with very low body roll for its height and ground clearance - but it's still a big tall...
Some cars are smarter than that though. They will only show tire pressure after a bit of warm-up driving, and won't alert to being a few pounds low until after that warmup, but they will alert right away for a fully flat tire. That's the sort of behavior that I hope Rivian will adopt.
A bit tangential: I am all for Rivian bringing out the upcoming 1,000 HP Quad motor, sure. But I think it's too much power for the chassis and I don't want one. I own the current 835 HP quad motor R1S and I also own an even faster Porsche Taycan - which I mention so you know that I am not scared...
