  1. Using the Rivian portable charger with a generator

When you say “jump to the waterline” - I’m not 100% sure what you mean. But as long as whatever you’re jumping to has a solid connection to the earth… then I think this should work.
  2. Using the Rivian portable charger with a generator

…and I’m charging at 1.4 kW! Thanks to everyone who helped me with this. I really appreciate that you took the time.
  3. Using the Rivian portable charger with a generator

Yep, that’s the issue - although it was sold as a “ground-neutral bonding plug”… there’s no bonding wire inside, lol. Back to the hardware store for some wire.
  4. Using the Rivian portable charger with a generator

Well, I got the bonding plug from Home Depot, and… no joy. The charger acts just like it did without it. To get the stupid questions out of the way first… am I using the thing correctly? I thought I understood that I needed to plug it into an unused outlet on the generator and plug the charger...
  5. Using the Rivian portable charger with a generator

Well, it’s rated at4 kW (starting wattage, 3.3 kW running), but I can throttle the current setting if need be. The TT-30 should be able to deliver around 2.8 kW at 24 amps, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed.
  6. Using the Rivian portable charger with a generator

Thanks. I've already got the TT-30 adapter, which works great. I'm familiar with the process of setting the charging amperage, so I think I’m set. The generator wants to be run at half power for the first 5 hours of operation, so I’ll run it via the 5-15 for a while as a test run. Then we’ll do...
  7. Using the Rivian portable charger with a generator

Fantastic, I knew I'd get a good answer here. Home Depot has them in stock and I’m going to grab one tomorrow. Thanks very much for the help!
  8. Using the Rivian portable charger with a generator

I’ve recently purchased a Westinghouse iGen4000DFc inverter generator, rated at 4kW. I was hoping to be able to use this is a portable recharging solution for when I’m doing extended overland trips. But when I plug the portable charger into the generator, it just gives me the pulsating red...
  9. Wait for R2 or get an R1?

I personally wouldn’t worry too much about technological obsolescence. 2022 R1T driver here (so Gen 1), and the only real feature I'm FOMO-ing about is the better autonomy features in Gen 2. And that isn’t THAT big of a deal to me. In my experience the navigation software has been pretty great...
  10. Greenridge State Forest (MD) Novice/Intermediate Off-roading May 15th

    I’m looking forward to it!
  11. Greenridge State Forest (MD) Novice/Intermediate Off-roading May 15th

Gotcha. One more question: what type of radios are we using? CB or GMRS?
  12. Greenridge State Forest (MD) Novice/Intermediate Off-roading May 15th

I’m interested. The 15th seems to be a Friday though - is that right?
  13. Mounting a Pelican cargo case to the crossbars - any ideas?

All - I've recently ordered a Pelican BX80 cargo case, and I would really, really like to mount it to my cargo crossbars (mounted over the cab of my R1T) to save space in the bed. However, Pelican doesn't seem to make any hardware that's compatible with Rivian crossbars. Has anyone had...
  14. Rivian E-Bike (by ALSO startup) revealed in leaked images

My understanding is that they're not actually spending money on it, or at least not very much. ALSO started as a Rivian effort, but Rivian has since spun it off into an independent company (retaining a minority stake, I think). ALSO is now an independent company, and the only connection to...
  15. Center & Drivers Screens Reboot WHILE DRIVING?

I’ve had it happen like twice in 2 1/2 years. Scary but not really a big deal. The reboot process prioritizes getting the most vital data up first, so you’ll see your speedometer back within seconds, etc.
  16. New Rivian dispensers and non competitive pricing

And I think it’s a harder problem than the tech world appreciates. As an example: I can already do things like “prefer” or “avoid” certain charge networks. But while I really would like to avoid, say, EA… I don’t want to avoid them so much that I’d go 50 miles out of my way to get to a more...
  17. Buying Used 22 R1T - Dealer Extended Warranty Worth It?

The reason companies offer extended warranties is that they think the warranty will cost more than you'd pay in repairs - otherwise they wouldn’t be profitable. Extended warranties are a form of insurance - you don’t buy them to save money (you’re almost guaranteed not to). The only reason to...
  18. New Rivian dispensers and non competitive pricing

My thing with this: I’m willing to pay more to get the benefit of plug & charge (I needed to charge at an EA station the other day, and my god, what a pain in the ass). But if I can get that at a supercharger for cheaper, why would I ever hit a RAN charger? in the end, though… I use public...
  19. Vampire Drain Fix: How to solve in under a minute (indoor or outdoor)

Well. My total vampire drain amounts to around 6 miles/night at most. So if I get 2 miles/kWh, that means I’m losing 3 kWh a night. And given that I’m paying $.12 per kWh… we're talking 36 cents a day. I'm probably wasting more energy than that staring into the refrigerator trying to decide what...
