Happens to me quite often, I assumed it was just connecting to the phone it "saw" first.

Not at the moment, some folks with early access have mentioned that a lite version that doesn't need Connect+ might come in the future.

That's good to hear but it's still lacking in messaging features that I'd like to see such as group messaging and What's App.

BMW have stated that OTA updates will happen for the iX3 and new features will be introduced. I don't think it will be as often as Rivian updates but it will happen.
