I otherwise like the truck. If they added CarPlay, I'd get one. So, I monitor the forum for CarPlay threads, in the hope they change their minds.
It does happen:
Lack of CarPlay is why I didn't buy a Rivian. Lack of CarPlay is why I won't buy any Rivian's the the future.
What a weird, bold face lie (CarPlay does not need to take over every pixel and often runs within a window).
Anything non standard falls apart without CarPlay.
E.g. I use overcast to listen to podcasts, and podcasts 90% of what I listen to when driving. With CarPlay, my podcast library synced between all my cars (which are made by different car companies), and when I'm walking, and when I'm listening...
I need CarPlay for podcasts to not be horribly annoying in a Rivian, for the reason I explained in the post you quoted.
... and all my cars have their modem's cell phone antenna's disconnected, because i don't want any car makers having that kind of access to me.
Amusingly, you're only seeing the people that are annoyed by carplay, but not the deal breaker people.
I didn't get a Rivian because of lack of CarPlay.
Overwhelmingly (95% of the time), what I listen to is podcasts. Having it on carplay is HUGELY important for podcasts, because it keep...
Meanwhile, at Honda, they've released a wireless carplay retrofit for 2018-2022 Accords:

Ha. I'm pretty stubborn. I've never owned a car with an automatic transmission or turbo, both of which are much harder to avoid than no CarPlay.
My current EV (which is not automatic-- single speed means no shifting) has carplay. If it turns out no EVs have CarPlay (seems unlikely), I'll just...
The underlying problem is that nobody wants to be forced to pay again for a worse version (when equivalent functionality even exists) of something they're already paying for. It's customer hostile by Rivian.
Even if Rivian got to the point where their offering wasn't significantly worse and...

Yes. Apple supports booting into other OSs through Bootcamp, and Google supports ChromeOS on Mac.
It's really not hard to say-- I can't think of anything they could offer that would make me want to pay monthly. It only makes me not want their vehicle.
I especially don't want to pay monthly for data, as I'm already paying monthly for that (my phone). Charging me again for a worse version of...
